The Daylight War: Voyager Interview

Posted by Meg

A couple weeks ago, Voyager asked U.K. fans to submit questions to ask Peat before the release of The Daylight War. The cream of the crop were chosen and Peat answered them on Voyager’s site. Peat fields questions on his writing process, favorite books and some hints as to what is coming after The Daylight War. Check out the interview here.

Pre-order the U.K. version of The Daylight War here. Peat will be traveling to England this February/March along with a host of other places. Check out his full schedule to see if he is coming to a city near you.

  3. Please can somebody tell me when Daylight war will be released on audio book with Peter Joyce narrating. Can’t find info anywhere. Is this going to happen?

  5. I am really disappointed that the The Daylight War isn’t available in the UK as an audiobook. Why?

Posted by Zind, on February 15th, 2013 at 12:45 pm
  6. Peter Joyce IS the voice of the the Demon Cycle. I started listening to the Pete Bradbury version, and it’s just not working for me, Pete is very good & sounds great, but it’s not the same. So I’ll be waiting on Peter’s naration of the Daylight War.
Please tell me how long i need to wait!!!!!!

  7. Hey there…

Same question again. When will Joyce narration be out!? Can someone reply – even if only to say you’re looking into it?

Really excited to listen to it!!!!! :-)

  8. Hi All,

Sorry for the wait. There will be a UK Audiobook and we will get back to you soon on who the narrator is.

    Thank you for your patience!

  9. That response does not sound promising for Peter Joyce narration. Please don’t change the narrator. These books are fantastic but a change in the narrator would be a disaster!!!!!!!!!

  10. First & foremost I must compliment Mr Brett on his well crafted & absorbing tale I am a great fan & particulaly enjoy the audio books. I have been looking forward too treating myself with a relisten to the first two books before I began The Daylight War. Please can you give us some Idea of the timescale before we get a UK release on audible. If there is some problem with Peter Joyce Narrating , Can the US releases not be offered on the UK site.(this is not ideal as changing narrators halfway through a story I feel detracts from your enjoyment) but at least we would have the option. Thank you for your time & keep up the good work
    regards Al

  12. Thank you for putting Daylight War on uk audible. Just wanted to know if there will be a Peter Joyce narration. If so I will wait. Anybody got any ideas?

  14. Could I just add my request for confirmation on whether there will be a Peter Joyce narrated version? I am just unsure from the above whether the release of the US narrated version on Audible (UK) is the UK audiobook, or is this going to be replaced in the future?

  15. They have just released the Daylight War on Audible.co.uk but it Pete Bradbury not Peter Joyce! I’m gutted it doesn’t sound right at all, listened to a couple of minutes and switched it off! Please tell me you have had Peter Joyce do it as well and of you have when will it be out?

Posted by Christie Jones, on February 25th, 2013 at 2:04 pm
  16. Relieved….. Audible have let me return it. I’ll be gutted if we don’t get a Peter Joyce version though

Posted by Christie Jones, on February 25th, 2013 at 2:09 pm
  17. Been a massive fan of the Demon cycle and thank you for an excellent adventure. I have listened to the books numerous times now and have just finished The Desert Spear again ready for the Daylight War release.
I’ve just listened to a sample of Peter Bradbury and to say i’m gutted is an understatement.
I’m sure he’s a good Narrator for the people who started the D.C with him. But for uk readers its no different than replacing all the actors from Harry Potter before the final film. Peter Joyce has not only given each character a visual impression in my mind but also the scenery’s of Cutters Hollow and Tibbets Brook etc to be visualized like Old English villages.
Please let us know if there will be a Peter Joyce version or not. If not does anybody know were he lives so I can ask him to read it to me lol

Fingers crossed for a Peter Joyce version!!!

  18. I have read thé book twice and like you listening to thé audio book is a evening pastime i have found this duff version is abit more manageable if you turn thé vocal speed to 0.5 otherwise this Guy makes no sense his tones are irratic really loud one
minute and quite thé nx rubbish

  19. Hi everybody,

Thank you for your patience. I know it’s hard not knowing. The audiobook is available in the UK with Pete Bradbury as the narrator. Bradbury is now the only English narrator, and we encourage people to give him a try! He is awesome.

Posted by megelizabeth, on February 26th, 2013 at 12:38 pm
  20. I’ve tried listening to the new narrator. I really hate it. Switch audiobook narrators if you must but not in the middle of a series.

I’ve returned mine to audible. I recommend everyone else do the same.

Posted by Alistair, on February 27th, 2013 at 6:13 am
  21. i am absolutely gutted that peter joyce is not doing the audible.friends tell me the other guy is awful re .this series. the first two are two of the best audible books i have heard .great stories but they owe so much to peter joyce.

Posted by jon, on February 27th, 2013 at 12:24 pm
  22. I can’t believe it!!! Come back Peter Joyce. All is forgiven. Seeing what others say above makes this all the worse. Peter Joyce helped create this world for the listeners in the UK. His tone and accents were unique, and perfect for this series. Is there nothing that can be done??????

Posted by Michael, on February 27th, 2013 at 4:45 pm
  23. Bit gutted joyce won’t be reading but to be honest i just want to get the audiobook!! When will australia have access to it? Audible won’t let me buy it and it’s not on itunes like the first two books, i’m dying here waiting especially with the ending of the last one!

Posted by Grant, on February 27th, 2013 at 8:50 pm
  24. At first i found the new guys voice annoying, but what i did was replayed the first 30-40 minutes, which did not give to much away, this got my used to the new voices.
I am about half way though now, and it is going well with his voice, it will never be as good but its not bad.

  26. Peter Brett – Peter Joyce – Peter Brett – Peter Joyce -
Peter Brett – Peter Joyce – Peter Brett – Peter Joyce -
Peter Joyce – Peter Brett – Peter Joyce – Peter Joyce -
Peter Joyce – Peter Joyce…………. Joyce — Joyce — Joyce — Joyce — Joyce — Joyce — Joyce — Joyce ——- Pete Bradbury _~##… WTF!!! why???……………………………………………………………. if anyone else can narrate this in similar fashion and tone to Peter Joyce outside of itunes, i’m definitely purchasing it instead of Pete Bradley’s version (Pete Bradley may be good at what he does but sorry) for me, it feels like the nostalgia has gone! its dead. its like growing up all over again…what a disappointment ha ha! Narrating this book, Joyce made me feel like a child again, excited by the fantasy world Brett has created, now its just anOTHER book! the magic has left the (imagination) building – oh well such is life i suppose… but that is precisely why is choose fantasy films or books – to leave this life and get swept away, if i cant trust audio books to deliver then i think i’ll just have to stick with movies or single book novels like Stephen King produces, thanks for listening and i don’t mean any offence to Mr Bradley, he just can’t replace Joyce at this stage.

  27. I think all these comments sum up how I feel at no Peter Joyce audio. I think it is about time you started to respond accordingly!!!!!

  28. Yea there hasn’t been any reson why the british fans got screwed over wid the USA version its ruined it for me I can’t even listen to it peter Joyce is the man come on Mr Brett were counting on you to look after your fans and do the right thing

Posted by colin goodger, on March 9th, 2013 at 5:53 pm
  29. Got to add that peter joyce was the perfect narrator and changing halfway through is a nightmare very disappointing.

Posted by Matthew Bolt, on March 9th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
  30. I listened to the sample narration of the Daylight War on iTunes – and NO WAY would I pay for it. Peter Joyce was superb, is superb, and I am baffled as to who would think it a smart move to change narrators halfway through a series. I have bought all 3 books in first edition hardcover, so I am a real fan – but am not prepared to purchase a second-string narration. PLEASE consider commissioning a UK audiobook with who is clearly the preferred narrator! I suspect there are many who would be happy to purchase a Peter Joyce narrated Daylight War – so perhaps this makes commercial sense?

Posted by bill warrilow, on March 11th, 2013 at 10:25 am
  31. As above really. The series needs continuity on the narration – plus I find Peter Joyce is just a much more accomplished ‘voice man’. Please…some consideration for those that spend the money..

Posted by Brett Thompson, on March 11th, 2013 at 11:18 am
  32. Cannot bring myself to buy audio book with Pete Bradbury. Sorry Meg he’s not awesome. Its not just that, he’s not Peter Joyce and i find his annunciation difficult to pick up on.

Posted by Paul Stephenson, on March 11th, 2013 at 7:47 pm
  33. Wow! Really enjoyed the first two books narration, why change from Peter Joyce???

Posted by Alex, on March 12th, 2013 at 10:40 am
  34. I think we can all agree, this is not an attack on Pete Bradbury. I am sure he is very good at what he does. But whoever had the idea to change the UK narration halfway through a series needs to have a think!!!! Just look at the reviews on Audible UK. A fantastic series with amazing audiobooks has been tarnished by some bright spark who thought “I know lets give the UK the American narrator”. Please take note of what the paying customer thinks. Please bring Peter Joyce back.

Posted by Michael, on March 12th, 2013 at 1:55 pm
  35. I have also chosen not to purchase The Daylight War due to the narration. I hope that, given the comments here and elsewhere, the decision not to produce a version for the UK market can be reconsidered.

  37. Hi,

I love the DC series.. but id thought id let you know how i feel.. which is the same as above.. i have however tried giving Peter Bradbury a listen im 6hrs in and im still trying to get into it – i dont feel connected to all the characters anymore :( (((( .. he would be ‘aswesome’ if you used him from book 1 – Please get Peter Joyce to narrate the 3rd book!

    Thanks,

Posted by Nick, on March 13th, 2013 at 1:08 pm
  38. Dear Peter Brett – I think it is clear that your fans really want you to get Joyce back for the narration.

You should try listening to the first 2 books and then swapping narrator. All the characters and places get confused in your mind.

Meg – can you please show these comments to Peter Brett and ask if he can respond? PLEASE? He should be made aware of this issue (after all, its only an issue as his books are so good!!).

Can we also have a reason why Peter Joyce will not be narrating this one?

Posted by Ollie, on March 14th, 2013 at 6:54 pm
  39. Reading all these posts and yet no response . I am a huge fan listen to Peter Joyce’s versions every night when I go to bed I can’t listen to book three the voices are all wrong ! !!!!! What a way to show how important your uk fans are !!! You should be ashamed

Posted by Georgie, on March 15th, 2013 at 4:34 pm
  40. Hi

Shocked, sold out for an American narrator, I’ve purchased both previous audio versions of this series and now I find myself unable to continue. Has Peter listened to all three audio versions all the way through, I’m sure he hasn’t or he would have a second version released with Peter Joyce. Very disappointed, if you start a series of books you have an obligation to the reader / listener who buy into it to have continuity, this unfortunately has not happened. I think a comment by Mr Brett is well over due.

  43. I can’t understand why the narrator has been changed. When you listen to an audio book, you build up a picture in your head based on the voice that is reading it. When you change the voice you change the way you perceive the story. Sorry to say I will not be purchasing the 3rd book until Peter Joyce Reeds it.

Posted by Paul, on March 18th, 2013 at 11:10 am
  44. And the days slowly pass buy with out my Peter Joyce demon cycle fix .thanks peat don’t really understand why you came to England you obvisly don’t give a toss about us

Posted by Georgie, on March 18th, 2013 at 12:08 pm
  45. I’m becoming convinced there are some underhand dealings going on within the British book market that is influencing the decision to change the popular narration of this series in order to distract current and would-be British followers from Peter Brett. Even if other British fantasy authors have a better chance of being noticed by the world wide fantasy market by hindering Brett’s influence on the British reader/listener… is this right? The DC series so far, as narrated by Peter Joyce; is a serious contender for a top spot in fantasy entertainment. Reading from the page is a good experience but underestimating the influence and power good narrators bring to the whole story is a big mistake! I choose the audio book option because the story environment becomes literally 3D when a good narrator brings it to life! Think… have you ever been to a 3D movie and removed the glasses halfway into a good film….. Need I say more!!!! Please put the original reading glasses back where they belong. BTW imagination should be allowed to have greater influence within the entertainment sector rather than having to jump through hoops to suit a political agenda especially in respect of the fantasy genre I think? Seriously!… I hope I’m wrong and the audio book entertainment sector isn’t being compromised for selfish political reasons

Posted by simon, on March 18th, 2013 at 6:48 pm
  46. Hi Meg – could you or Peter please tell us what is going on and WHY!?

Ignoring these messages is really leaving a bitter taste in peoples mouths.

  47. I appreciate everyone’s concerns, and will address them in proper fashion in the next few days now that I am finally through with six weeks of near-constant traveling.

However, being rude to Meg, implying that I don’t care about my UK audience, or suggesting underhanded dealings is inappropriate, misinformed, and impolite.

Please be patient and look to the blog for a response from me soon.

your a great author and I really hope you have good news thanks

  50. Thanks Peter

Just from an Australian point of view as well, I listened to the first 2 audio books, narrated by Peter Joyce, and I can’t honestly imagine listening to the third one without him.

I’ll also be waiting until The Daylight War is narrated by him. If you can confirm that there definitely will not be a version read by Peter Joyce, I will physically read the book.

This is because once you have a picture of the characters in your head, after listening to about 50+ hours of his narration (which is absolutely fantastic), I’d prefer not to ruin it with a new narrator.

I can’t wait to find out what happens in this book, but honestly, it will be worth the wait to hear Peter Joyce’s narration.

Please let us know when you can.

    Cheers

  51. I loved the first two audiobooks (Peter Joyce versions) and have to agree with some others above – I’ll be leaving the series at this point if Peter Joyce will not be reading any further books. It’s a shame but there are a lot of other series out there that keep the same narrator throughout, comping the experience consistent.

  54. Peat said he’d use the blog (I guess that is the Peephole).

I also check back each day :-) .

These things take time though – I doubt its the only thing on his plate!

Posted by Mat, on March 26th, 2013 at 10:01 am
  55. Yeah, the guy has been touring like mad for weeks, all over the place. I imagine he’s actually taking some time to spend with his family.

But still, I also wait with baited breath in the hope that they will do a Peter Joyce version. I bought the Pete Bradbury version on iTunes, and although the guy is good in his own right, it is just not the same without the consistency. I would gladly fork out the £16 for another copy with Peter Joyce as narrator though since I love Mr. Brett’s work so much.

It’s also interesting to note that this has happened before: Peter Joyce narrated a bunch of Raymond E Feist’s later work, all of which were excellent. Then, BAM! A Crown Imperilled was released and John Meagher is the narrator….which was a damn shame since Peter Joyce had narrated the books in a series and his portrayal was spot on.

Anyway, from what I have listened to Daylight War already, it is fantastic and everything I hoped it to be. I shall wait to see what Mr. Brett says about the possibility of another version before giving it a shot. In the mean time I have returned to listening to the first two.

    Cheers!

  56. So have I there so good. A few days is not a week though
so I hope were not waiting to get let down il be devastated if the rest of the series is ruined iv read the book. And purchased the audio book as well I have not returned it even though I can’t listen to it and will also be buying a peter Joyce version fingers crossed peoples

  57. Hi, absolutely loved the first two audio books read by Peter Joyce, completely gutted when he was replaced, that being said I’ve purchased the third book with new narration. I would like to say there is nothing wrong with Pete Bradbury and he’s obviously a very accomplished reader but all the continuity has gone from the story. The most disappointing thing is I’m about two hours into the story and I’ve not been gripped as I was in the previous two books, I’m not desperate to listen to the next chapter because its become a choir rather than a pleasure, I know it’s not that this is a bad book it’s as if I’ve started listening to a trilogy without reading the first two books. What makes this worse is that this has possibly got another to books to go and if nothing changes I won’t get the end.
It’s a real shame that after writing such an amazing series of books that it’s been let down by something so trivial.

Posted by Michael, on March 27th, 2013 at 3:25 am
  58. I guess we could all start from book 1 and listen to Bradbury all the way through.

Would help with the continuity then…

Posted by Olie, on March 28th, 2013 at 11:45 am
  59. Us Brits pronounce our word differently to how the Americans do! That is why we need a Brit or someone who speaks English or read this. It’s a great story but with pete Bradbury reading it its lost its sole as he can’t say the name of the characters how a Brit would!

Posted by Chris, on March 28th, 2013 at 4:44 pm
  60. I would rather sack it of all together than start again with Bradbury are you mad it’s like a different story all together when I listen to an audio book if the narrator sounds funny I don’t even try to listen to it

Posted by Colin goodger, on March 28th, 2013 at 6:37 pm
  61. This is a flippin outrage
I purchased the first two audio books of the Peter Brett and am now feeling cheated I am unable to read the books as I have a sever eye condition so I am unable to read for long periods of time so you can understand the crushing disappointment that I felt when herd the voice of the narrator for example who the flippin hell is Allen, looking at all the negative response that this new narrator has received, even I can see that the new narrator was a bad idear and I’m Partially blind. Please change the narrator
    Many thanks

Posted by Ben, on March 29th, 2013 at 2:05 pm
  62. This is disgusting you should be ashamed peter v brett!!! It has now been 2 weeks since you told us we would have an explanation two why peter Joyce has not continued on his great work and nearly 2 months since you released your latest book/audiobook this is not how you treat your fans this is not how you release an audio book with no answer to why it’s been spoilt buy a change in narrator .
    thanks for nothing!!

Posted by Colin goodger, on April 1st, 2013 at 8:30 am
  63. We may speak the same language but we are poles apart in how we pronce it. This is one of the things that is getting under the skin of us Brits as we do love the book and they mean a lot to the fans. It just feels like we are being taken for a ride as it might be cheaper for your publishers just to give us the amarican virsion but it you look at the reviews on iTunes and audible.co.uk you will see most of the people there want peter Joyce back. Other good audio book keep the same narrator so please do the same for us.

  65. I do wish to add my voice to those clamouring for a Peter Joyce audio book version of The Daylight War as I don’t want to risk there being any doubt that there is a groundswell of opinion out here. I share the extreme disappointment and impatience expresses in the posts of others here, but do find it difficult to feel solidarity with the accusatory and nasty posts. Nevertheless, I do really hope this is resolved soon. Please?

Posted by Macca, on April 3rd, 2013 at 6:23 pm
  66. Concur, not with the tosh about British and our pronunciation but once the journey starts with a character it should not be changed.

I would appreciate it if the author makes further effort to address the comments left as it would be to all benefit to have site of any action to be taken.

It goes with out saying my money is in my pocket until there’s a Joyce version otherwise it’s the beat of his wings come August for me.

  69. Apologies for the delay, but after six weeks of touring, I was left with some major real-life stuff to deal with in addition to piles of business admin. I also needed to have some discussions with the publisher on this issue.

It pleases me that most, if not all, of those of you posting have been polite and patient. I will have a post up soon. Working on it today.

  70. I just finished the Daylight War Audiobook and am already in anticipation for the next instalment – dare you to leave us with such a cliffie, Peat :)
I found it horrible however to see that people rated the audiobook so badly due to the new narrator . I loved Peter Joyce’s narration, but it took me about 15 minutes to get used to the new voice – sometimes people are just overly dramatic!
Hope you don’t let yourself be bothered by them too much!
    The Demon Cycle is fantastic!!!

  71. Just like mirror what Chrissie said above and say thank you to the author for yet another fantastic book. Pre-orderd the book and devoured it within a week and because i love the audiobooks almost as much as my hard copies i bought the audiobook from audible.co.uk. I was shocked when i realised that it was not the same narrator. However, while I too look forward to the return of Peter Joyce as the UK voice, once i got over the change in the narrator i realise how subtle Pete Bradbury is in his narration and i find myself enjoying book all over again.

  72. I to am incensed at the change in narrator,
Why why why ruin a series by changing the whole dynamic part way through. The guy is not even close to Peter Joyce and there has been no explanation why the change was made. Sorry but can’t continue with the series, as the publisher obviously doesn’t understand or doesn’t care what the reader wants.
    Very disappointed indeed

  74. Hi,
I just want to echo the same thoughts as everyone else. Listening to the sample on audible.co.uk, the flow and spirit of the previous books isn’t there for me.
Changing Narrator in a series throws the listener out of the story IMO. However, it is not to say changing narrator doesn’t work. if the story has a different main character, this sometimes works well. This series however, i feel the same narrator really is needed. Peter Joyce portrays the characters and the feel of the book really well and is easy listening.

To put context why the listeners are outraged, I would strongly suggest Peter listens to the first few chapters of books 1 & 2 read by Peter Joyce and then try book 3; its a strong disconnect for the listener.

    Kind Regards,
    Kris
