Halloween 2013, Part 2

Posted by Peat

Lots of things went wrong this Halloween, to the point it started to feel like the Nie was out to cast a pall on the holiday for a second year in a row. As you saw in my first post, Cassie had a mild flu and almost missed her school Halloween party. She managed to rally enough to make an appearance, but it was hardly ideal.

My plan was to make up for it on Halloween night with some awesome trick or treating. We even planned matching costumes from The Incredibles:

But Halloween morning was gray and rainy. Weather reports, for what they’re worth, suggested the lousy weather wasn’t going anywhere. Better than last year’s hurricane, of course, but still a major downer.

The weather was holding at warm and muggy when I picked up C as school, only to find her covered in hives from a skin cream allergy. She wanted to go trick or treating, but she was also itchy and miserable. Gave her Benadryl, knowing it would knock her out, but hoping I could rally her after a 90 minute nap.

It was a struggle, but the power of All Hallows Eve prevailed. The hives vanished without a trace, I let C have some chocolate for a kickstart, and we suited up.

Not a lot of trick or treating in my college-heavy East Village neighborhood, so we went to a block party on the Upper West Side. Tons of trick or treaters, decorations, and even an apartment that made their lobby into a haunted house!

Take the night off, supes. Elasti-Cassie’s got the watch.

Reader @DirkLake sent me a tweet, trying to upstage us. Admittedly, they were better equipped:

@PVBrett we decided to go that route too. Happy Halloween

After we got home, I looked in Cassie’s bookbag and was stunned. I’m all for getting kids to read as early as possible, but I mean really. Who gives five year old homework on Halloween?

  1. Thanks for sharing! Seeing these made up for my lonely All Hallows Eve. I did not have a single trick or treater and I had some really good candy and fruit to give!

  2. Yah, I don’t know about that homework on Halloween bit. Suddenly realizing the perks of small town living, they made the Friday after Halloween a “Teacher Training Day” here so the kids could stay up on Thursday and Trick or Treat or go to the city Halloween Party.

I was really happy to see about 50 trick or treaters on my block, we usually don’t get any because it’s the last block before the town ends, so I gave out full size candy bars for the first time, it was awesome and California weather held out to boot.

Anywho….Cassie’s costume is awesome, I saw way too many princesses and fairies, got a little monotonous.
