A while ago, fan and quilt designer Sondra sent this message to Peat:

I’m a quilt designer and I have a special quilt that needs a little girl. For all of the wonderful hours I’ve spent reading your books, I’d like to give a little back so to speak. I believe there’s a little angel close to you that will be 3 soon and I think she’d be the perfect little girl for this special quilt. I’ll attach a picture for you. If this ok with you I can send it wherever you’d like me to. Thank you again for sharing all the awsome kookery that runs through your mind

Sondra sent Cassie a beautiful handmade quilt. This is what Peat had to say about Cassie’s reaction:

Cassie loves the quilt. She is always naming the bugs in the pattern. “Bee!” “Butterfly!” She calls it her “bug quilt” and has slept with it ever since it arrived.

Posted by Meg

Back in August, Peat received a package in the mail containing the subway posters from the U.K. Campaign “Read Brett Yet?” Thinking it was just the subway posters that were too big to put the walls of his office, he put off opening it for three months until I started as Peat’s assistant. We opened the package, hoping the posters would be a manageable size, but instead we discovered a Box of Wonders: fantasy books, subway posters of your lastest book and a David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy.

Unwrapping!

I wonder what could be in here?

Mini-Snaga!

But wait … there’s more?

A Game of Thrones in Hardcover

The posters are, in fact, giant, so we held off on unfurling them.

This is the design of the U.K.’s “Read Brett Yet?” campaign.

And here is the poster in its natural habitat, the London Underground.

And, purely for your enjoyment, here is Cassie with the mini-snaga looking like she’s going to wreak some major havoc.

Peat just told me he’s been making a “shitload” of progress on the Daylight War recently so he hasn’t been able to post much, so I’m posting instead. I’m sure you’ll all prefer that and add your own “Write! Write like the wind!” comments as well. To tide you over until he finishes the book, here are some great stuff from the PVB world.

As you may remember from this post, Voyager is doing a big campaign in the UK with the slogan “Read Brett yet?”. They did a great post about the campaign here. Perhaps one of the coolest things about this campaign for The Desert Spear is that Waterstones is including a belly-banded version of it that includes a booklet of The Great Bazaar. This is quite special since The Great Bazaar hasn’t been published in the UK before. You can see it here. It’s the pages that seem to be facing the wrong way. (It’s not, I promise!)

You can see posters at major underground tube stops all over London for it. This one was at the Moorgate station, but posters have been sighted at South Kensington and others.

You can find Peat quoted in this cool article from Salon.com. It talks about older guys who are going back to Dungeons & Dragons after many years and Peat talks about how D&D helped him become a better writer. Sadly, it does make me a little envious as I’m not an older man who is returning to an old past time…it does really make me want to find a new D&D group though.

I’m not sure why the internet has gotten so violent recently; we had the cage match with Arlen and Peat himself is getting in on some Battle Royale action at Fantasy Faction. Fantasy Faction is a message board so feel free to chime in yourself.

Peat also did a great interview at SFSignal. It’s pretty long, covering tons of stuff like why he isn’t called Peter VD Brett, the ever lovely Cassie, his awesome friends, his upcoming Red Sonja comic, as well as the Daylight War (everyone wants to know about that, right?), the Warded Man movie (and leading from that superhero and fantasy movies in general), and why you should read epic fantasy series even though they’re not finished yet (I’m looking at you Game of Thrones). It’s a really fun and informative interview.

SF Signal also did another interview with Peat about music here. It’s a cool interview and really can tell you a lot about his working style, because as he says, he listens to music constantly while working (which I can vouch for), and I’m going to add that his music collection is huge, so he knows what he’s talking about (and that’s not just me being nice to my boss!;)).

Peat is nominated for the David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy for Desert Spear! He’s already on the short list, and so you can now vote for him by going here. It will only take about 10 seconds so you don’t have to do a long form or anything.

You may remember Birte from this post. She had written two music compositions based off of the books and she even made cover art!

Someone else has also taken the same vein; Agnieszka wrote a composition for the Desert Spear as well.

A while ago, Pat Rothfuss was doing a book signing tour and was in the city along with little baby Oot! Of course Peat had to go, but he didn’t want to stand in line for hours with little Cassie, so I held a spot for him. Here is is an adorable picture of Cassie with Pat Rothfuss. Cassie is pretty cute too.

You may remember Marken as the cool guy who made the Thesan Wiki. We did a post about it here. Well, apparently he is a man of many talents; he’s created a comic of The Warded Man. Here is his first strip, and it starts off with a bang… if you could call it that.

Here is his sketch of young Arlen by himself.

Also in the news, the rights to The Desert Spear have been sold to Varrak in Estonia. You may remember the Estonian cover of The Painted Man which is really different from all the other versions.

The pencils and edits are done for Red Sonja Blue and they look fantastic. Right now Peat is waiting on the coloring and lettering to be finished. It will be coming out in late June and it’s going to be awesome!

They have made the first few copies of L’Or de Brayan. I’m sure that when you take a look at it you’re going to gasp like I did. It’s absolutely fantastic and I’ve decided that I need to learn French.

We have scary ones, calming ones, and readings in three different languages. You guys just like making the decision difficult, don’t you?
I can think of worse problems though. So, seriously, thank you all for entering. Keep an eye out on the blog for the winners announcement, which we will have up next week.

You can listen to the entries below and in the previous recap post, and in the original post. After that, vote for your favorites here.

Jessica read from the last chapter of The Desert Spear. You can really hear the tension in the scene:

I was very excited to see that Kissifrott was reading from The Desert Spear (chapter 33) in French! I love comparing how the books sound in the different languages:

Dave Brendon reading from The Desert Spear prologue. I love his deep voice. It’s very calming:

Eve did a version in English which you can see in the previous post. She managed to do it in German as well. I’m not sure yet which I like better, yet:

And while this entry was a little bit late, we decided to include it since she’s such a big fan. Thanks Cassie!

Sorry for the lack of blog updates lately. After a great weekend in Detroit for ConFusion, I was hammered from all sides this past week with promotional work for upcoming book launches (Desert Spear paperback, novellas, etc.), and some other awesome things I’m not yet at liberty to discuss. Plus lots of work on The Daylight War, particularly a 6500 word Inevera POV excerpt that will appear March 1 in the US eBook, and in April in the UK mass market paperback.

ConFusion was a blast. It was located at the Detroit Marriott Troy, off exit 69 on Big Beaver Road, Just past the Hooters.

No, seriously.

I got to finally meet my cyber-buddy Pat Rothfuss, as well as hang out with the likes of Paolo Bacigalupi, Cherie Priest, Tobias Buckell, John Scalzi, Doselle Young, and others, including the good folks of Subterranean Press, like my convention handler Yanni and her adorable baby Calista, who helped soothe my own baby missing. Here’s a shot from the first panel with Cherie, Doselle, John, Paolo and me at right.

I am struggling to find an assistant here in Brooklyn to help me out so I can focus more on writing and find time to blog more. In the meantime, here are some neat things that have been accumulating:

First off, Arthur, a two-time contest winner (Warding and Homemade Heroes), sent me his plushie One Arm, and as promised, I put it in Cassie’s crib. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised at the results:

I also finally sent out the last of the HH contest prizes, namely the grand prize set to Mia. This took me almost 2 months mainly because Mia asked me to do a sketch of Bruna in her copy of The Great Bazaar. Seeing as how there are only like 1500 copies of that book in existence and they are now eBaying for like $500, you can understand how reluctant I was to start scribbling in one. Finally I managed it, and I think the result was pretty cool:

Last but not least, I got a letter the other day from Bill X, who won the Daylight War tagline contest on the forums:

Hey Peat,

I woke up today and my wife said she had taken the best photo for me. My lilone xander was doing his usual playing Clone wars on wii dressed as vader (Don’t ask lol). He went to sit down and my wife had to remind him not to sit in my chair without making sure it was empty. He spotted my new signed copy of TWM and sat to look at the bookplate. Wife just couldn’t resist taking a pic since id be so proud of his advancement into UBER-Nerd land with me! Thought you would get a kick out of it.

BillX

That’s all for now. I will pick winners for the Limerick and Suggest a Contest contests soon, I promise!

Treading water…
