Reviews: Warded Man & Desert Spear

Posted by Meg

If you are like me, you LOVE re-reading favorite books. Especially in anticipation of a new one coming out. With the upcoming release of The Daylight War coming up on February 12th, bloggers and reviewers all over the interwebs are cracking open the Warded Man and Desert Spear. Listen to what they have to say! It might inspire you to go back and read some old favorites yourself.

Bob of Beautiful Ruins reads The Warded Man as one of his first picks of the New Year

… I found myself hooked right from the first chapter. Brett’s writing style is crisp and efficient, but also elegant in its own way. There’s a voice there that pulled me in and invited me to take a seat behind the warded door and listen to a story.

Leo of Jet Black Ink recently read and reviewed both The Warded Man and The Desert Spear, giving them both 5 star ratings.

Brett’s prose is simple and effective, but that’s not where the true talent lies and what makes the book such an unalloyed pleasure. It is his immense world and honest, true, awesome characters that make it the stellar success it is. There is nothing about The Warded Man that I did not like. Nothing.

An astounding yarn that miraculously outdoes its predecessor. Utterly compelling and dark in all the right places, with just the right amount of light and hope dolloped on top for sweetness. Brilliant.

Steff from Steff Reviews Books let’s us know what she thinks about The Desert Spear:

The detail of the world building is exquisite; to the point where if I was magically transported into the book I’m confident I could find my way around without a hitch, knowing my precise location based solely on the height of the locals; and the magic system, greatly developed as the characters explore deeper into its mysteries, is fascinating, dangerous and addictive in its effects and consequences.

Will you be re-reading any of the the Demon Cycle books before getting your hands on The Daylight War? Let us know in the comments!

Peat will be traveling all over the place starting February 12th. Check out the Appearances section on his website to see if he will be stopping by your city.

Creature Contest Winners!

Posted by Meg

Wow. Peat and I were amazed by all the incredible and creative entries. It turns out, creatures of all kinds are reading the Demon Cycle. It was hard to pick winners with such abundant awesomeness, but here are our favorites.

Grand Prize

Winners will receive U.K. copies of The Painted Man and The Desert Spear as well as a U.K. ARC of The Daylight War.

One of the first entries to the contest, the One Arm face palm illustration held up. Beautifully drawn and humorous, this drawing is incredibly endearing. We had a few really amazing drawn entries, but limited the winners to only one. The scene with One Arm is very special to Peat as it is one of the first scenes he ever wrote.

We just adored this hedgehog’s (or wardhog’s) fierce determination as he defends his turf. His face in the second picture is picture perfect pissed off. Story and captions by Alex V.

He’s ready to protect all around him in the first picture, his quillWard placed just so, his spear at the ready.

Battle damaged by determined

In full defense mode

Alex also sent in this adorable bonus video of the wardhog charging through the stone ward circle, into battle.

And finally, Eric with his lovely dog Lobo displaying Brayan’s Gold for a fantasy, wintertime theme. Cuteness win.

Runners Up

Winners will receive a hardcover U.S. copy of The Daylight War, signed by Peter V. Brett

Here are a couple outstanding entries we just had to include along with our Grand Prize winners.

Russell C. braved the cold and strange looks from neighbors to take this priceless shot!

Damian L. gave his newborn daughter a beautiful middle name … Leesha! And from the evidence shown in this picture, she just might be the Demon Cycle’s youngest fan!

Thank you to everyone who liked, commented and entered! Make sure to check out the Creature Contest Facebook Album for all the amazing entries.

Want to meet Peat? He will be touring in February and March after the release of The Daylight War. Check out his Appearances to see if he is headed to a city near you.
