Author D&D at Last!

Hey Gamers. Sorry for taking so long with this, but I think you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

Last January, the ConFusion science fiction and fantasy convention in Detroit, MI, in conjunction with Subterranean Press, hosted EPIC CONFUSION, bringing together some of the hottest names in fantasy, including Pat Rothfuss, Brent Weeks, Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie, Elizabeth Bear, and Jim Hines. It was an epic gathering the likes of which I have never seen.

After I cracked a joke on twitter that we should all play D&D while there, there was a massive rush of enthusiasm. I talked the idea over with my buddy Myke Cole. Not only was Myke a member of my college D&D group and a beta reader of all my books, he had his first novel, Control Point, coming out that month, and was attending the con with me. We went through our old D&D stuff, picked a module (Keep on the Borderlands), and started inviting people.

Our friend author Saladin Ahmed also had his first novel, Throne of the Crescent Moon about to launch, so we hatched a plan: Let the n00bs DM a table packed with some of the biggest egos in fantasy. We arranged to borrow an old video camera, and had Justin Landon of the great SF review blog Staffer’s Book Review do the filming.

The results were amazing. Scott and EBear were a little late, but author Jay Lake and Yanni Kuznia of Subterranean Press were happy to sit in and cover their characters for the first half of the game. There’s a reason why Myke is a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard. He ran a tight ship, taking no shit and making snap calls on complex game mechanics while Saladin played all the NPC’s with incredible dramatic flair. You can read write-ups of the event by Brent, Joe, and Myke. My own take on things (via Meg), including a bunch of pictures can be found here.

After some dithering, I got the recording to Meg, who did an amazing job spearheading the project from there. She had the tapes digitized and hired editor Erin McConnell to turn three hours of low quality tripod cam video and sound into something unique and awesome.

Special thanks to Pete Mitchell, who lent us his kickass song “Critical Hit” by from his band No More Kings (which I really hope is a Schoolhouse Rock reference) for the rockin’ closing credits.

DW Cover Contest Winners!

Posted by Meg

Peat and I were astounded at all the amazing covers that were sent in for the Daylight War Cover Contest. It turns out, this was also a fun way to think about what might happen in The Daylight War. The preview, featuring the first POV chapter for Inevera, influenced a lot of people’s choices on who to feature on their cover.

This was a tough contest to judge, but Peat and I are both really happy with the winners. So, with further ado …

Grand Prize

The five first prize winners all receive a rare Great Bazaar booklet that Peat received at Polcon.

  • Luke Fielding’s gorgeous cover really blew me away. Make sure to check out Luke’s art on his website.

  • One of the entries that doesn’t feature Inevera from Dwayne. Awesome combination of a drawing and photograph.

  • Marzena’s Inevera entry from Poland. Beautifully drawn, and I love the idea of Inevera controlling Jardir and Arlen with the alagai hora.

  • The very first entry submitted to the contest from Caroline. A beautiful composition including both Leesha and Inevera facing the sun.

  • Finally, we have Inevera rolling the dice from Alex. Beautifully realized.

Runners Up

The Second prize winner will receive a set of warded dice

  • Emily’s cover of Inevera. This entry really took my breath away.

  •  Margherita’s beautiful vision of Inevera based on her Grand Prize winning cosplay. Peat and I are going to have to think of new prizes that Margherita can win. She has ’em all!

  •  Arthur is another prize-winning fan. His cover is both dramatic and detailed.

Soon, we will see what the real cover is like. Curious? Check out the photo shoot for the UK cover that Voyager did a couple weeks back.

Thank you to everybody who entered! This was a fantastic contest. Be sure to check out all the incredible entries here.

The next contest is already in the works with a very high stakes prize: The Daylight War advanced reader copy.

We know a lot of people want to enter this contest, so we are making it very simple. Take a video of yourself (on your computer, your phone, your camera) telling Peat why you should have the ARC of The Daylight War. Pretty straightforward, and the sky is the limit. Feel free to film yourself anywhere using as many people, animals, costumes, props as you want to. Make a claymation film. An animation. Or just describe how incredible it would be to read The Daylight War.

Check back to the blog soon for details on this exciting contest.

Oh, and Happy Halloween!

TDW Cover: Last Entry

Posted by Meg

The very last and very beautiful entry comes from Emily. A slightly different take on Inevera.

After so many Inevera covers focusing on her power, manipulation and strength, I love that this cover seems to show a more vulnerable side to the character. Incredible job, Emily!

But wait! One more cover. This one was too late to be eligible for a prize, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t awesome! Dwayne sent in this fantastic cover, to be enjoyed by all:

The amber eyes are, well, eye-catching, and the mash of warm colors are beautifully blended. The text at the bottom, Inevera We Trust, is a nice touch.

That’s all of them! Check out all the entries here and comment on your favorites. We will be announcing the winners tomorrow morning at 8am EST.

TDW Cover: Elicius & Arthur

Posted by Meg

Elicius and Arthur are both veteren contest entrants with a lot of talent. Elicius sends in his entry of Inevera on the shores of Lakton:

Elicius’s thoughts:

I was hoping to invoke Inevera on the shores of Lakton, but I think it mostly comes across as….pinkish? In all honesty, I may have just used it as an excuse to play around in Photoshop for a bit, I hope that’s all right? [It may be sad, but I’m quite proud of figuring out the font, hehe.]

The profile shot photograph is from “TB | Photography”, a friend-of-a-friend & the sky is one of mine.

I am actually a fan of the pinkish background. Makes it feel like sunrise, and the font looks awesome against the colorful clouds.

Elicius sent a second entry as well! Same idea, different result.

Lovely job on both entries!

Be sure to check out Elicius’s other awesome prize-winning contest entries.

Arthur, who has done some pretty kick-ass contest entries in the past, blows us away with his Daylight War cover.

Four characters in one cover! Awesome! I feel like this cover is very cinematic with the dark background and Arlen and Jardir facing off at the top. Beautiful work, Arthur.

We are nearing the end of our entries! The contest winners will be announced this Wednesday October, 31st. Also known as Halloween.
