Tough Choices

Man, it’s really going to be hard to pick a winner for this competition. There have been so many great entries, with more every day. Take Karen from Rhode Island. Here’s what she had to say about her pix:

Today I hiked a 5-mile trail laden with a heavy backpack which included the Warded Man book, camera, and tripod. I hiked alone through the cold, snow, slush, and encountered several deer hunters. Luckily I was wearing my bright orange vest so I wouldn’t be shot! The destination of my hike was the Tri-State Marker. It is granite marker placed in the middle of the woods dated 1883 where the three states of RI, MA, and CT meet. I have attached a couple of pictures with different angles since I couldn’t get the pictures to show the three states at once. There is also a picture of me drawing some wards around the base of the marker.

Do I get bonus points for listening to The Warded Man on my MP3 player while I was on my excursion? I think I am the only person to have read and listened to your book while standing in three states simultaneously.

Also incredibly awesome is Lizette in California. Here’s what she had to say:

I went to my kids Islamic school…..what better backdrop than all the Muslim mommies waiting for their kids. 🙂 Some were so excited to enter the contest they insisted on taking pictures with the book alone,  (see the entry with the pregnant mom on the chair!) In any case, it was a wonderful opportunity to share your book and the whole genre in general with a new group. I kept getting asked, what are you doing? Let me see the book! Does it have sorcerers? Where can I get it? Why do you want to take our pictures? This is Qur’an class, what are you doing!?!? HA! It was fun!

Iris from Germany paints a nice holiday image, reading her book by the tree and on the stepladder to her decorated bookshelves:

Eve, also from Germany, wants to be the first female Messenger. Here she is in the freezing cold woods with her grimoire, which needed to be rescued from a dog demon:

Lisa from the UK went with a similar tactic, trying to let the cuteness of her dog sway the judges. She gets a demerit, though, for first sending in a pic of the pooch reading The Name of the Wind:

Desert Spear Video Ad

In addition to his Desert Spear ARC Contest (DSAC) entry yesterday, Dave-Brendon e-mailed me a link this morning to an awesome video ad he made for The Desert Spear. Check it out:

Contest Updates

I mailed out the last of the prizes from the Fan Art Contest today, along with a bunch of other signed books to various places all over the world. It feels good to have that out of the way.

So of course I’m starting all over with this new contest to win a Desert Spear ARC see details here. There have been lots of great entries today. Have a look:

AJ from Florida and I became pen pals while he was serving in Iraq. He’s apparently living next to Jurassic Park, and provided a little photo story:

Marc from Michigan thinks he can snag the prize by capitalizing on the cuteness of his son Dylan. He may be right:

Then we have Dave-Brendon from South Africa. Dave was one of the very first people to read an advance copy of The Painted Man in the summer of ’08, and he wrote to me immediately and interviewed me for his website. I think it might have been my first review ever. Dave is proud to own three out of four formats of the Voyager edition:

Last but not least we have two-fisted Ken from Arizona who runs the blog Neth Space. He is shouting at Robert Stanek, who I seem to recall has a penchant for doctoring himself into other people’s photos:

More Entires

Entries in the Desert Spear ARC Contest are starting to pick up speed. Here’s what came in yesterday:

Shhh! Aussie Brian doesn’t want anyone to know he reads at work:

German Iris is well protected as she reads. I love her room. The neat orderly bookshelves of her comics and fantasy novels remind me of my own collections.

French Jess got so scared of the demons she warded her closet and started reading in there:

Aussie Emily took The Painted Man to the desert to set the scene for the new book:

Texan Mihir cropped himself out of this photo, but I love it anyway. It really looks like the Painted Man is just strolling down this dark road at dusk:

Remember, the contest will go on for some time, but the best entry to come in by this Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, gets a copy for Christmas!

Added Incentive

Two entries in the Desert Spear Arc Contest so far. The first was Elijah from here in NYC, who sent me his entry within hours of my announcing the contest:

The next day this beautiful and eerie submission came from Emily:

Emily didn’t specify where she was from, but since she has the TPB edition, I am guessing she’s from Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa.

I was thinking that the slow response from the rest of you is due to a lack of urgency in the contest timing, so I decided to spice things up a bit. So far I have three advance copies to give away, but there’s no rule that I have to give them all out at once. So let’s say that while this contest will continue for some time, the best entry submitted by this coming Friday, December 18, will have an advance read copy of The Desert Spear sent out Fedex priority on Saturday the 19th, hopefully to arrive in time for Christmas/New Years.

Please include a full mailing address with all entries. I promise not to share any information online except your first name and country of origin.

Happy Holidays.
