Desert Spear ARC Contest

Desert_Spear_US_webSo. I spoke to Random House, and they are sending me “some” ARCs of The Desert Spear to give away. My precious, precious Desert Spear. Finally. After slaving over this story electronically for three years, words fail me when I try to describe how wonderful it is to finally hold a bound book. Somehow, it’s not real until then. I literally hugged my copy and did a little dance.

All I will say about The Desert Spear is that I am immensely proud of it. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written. No on in the world is more impatient than me for it to go on sale, and I’m really excited to have the chance to share a few copies early.

That’s right. It’s time for another contest.

I know some readers felt a little left out of the Fan Art Contest, so for this prize, so dear to my heart, I want to be as inclusive as possible. There’s a contest I’ve been saving for just this occasion. It’s really simple. All you need is an e-mail account, a copy of one of my books (any edition/language is fine), and a camera.

The Rules:

  1. Take a picture of yourself or a loved one (or even an enemy, I don’t care) holding one of my books.
  2. E-mail the picture to me at peat@www.petervbrett.com (Please include a full mailing address with all entries. I promise not to share any information online except your first name and country of origin.)
  3. That’s it.

Extra points will be added for creativity, exotic background, general awesomeness, etc. So if you’re traveling somewhere awesome over the holidays, you might want to consider photo ops.

More details as I have them…

  2. Sorry for “stupid question”, but what are this copies exactly? Are this “pre-release” copies of the final book (because amazon says the book will be available on april, 13th)? I’m not familiar with literarily business processes so bear with me πŸ˜‰

  6. CMI, “ARC” stands for “Advance Read Copy”, also known as galleys. These are printed and bound books, often without final design and proofreading, that are sent out in advance of a book release to reviewers, booksellers, etc., to allow reviewers to comment before the book is on sale, and to let sellers know what they’re ordering. Usually the author and their agent get a few copies as well, to give to friends/family or to use as sales tools to international publishers.

So the book will be coming out in hardcover in April, but in the meantime I’ll have a handful of copies to share with readers.

Dwayne, I’m not going to put a number limit on how many times one can enter, but I ask that people keep it reasonable and not flood me with a ton of entries.

Chantal, please don’t get eaten by a lion on my account. Though I am certain you are tender and delicious, we like having you around.

  8. Iris, I haven’t decided on a deadline yet. I just received 3 giveaway copies from Random House, but I will probably get some from Harper Voyager in January as well, and possibly some from Heyne in Germany. I may just keep the contest running and send out prizes periodically right up until launch.

  16. Hmm…I have a question. What if you bought the e-book (kindle) edition? Will a shot of the title page or some text in the shot on a kindle suffice or are you looking for ‘paper’ books?

Posted by Christa, on December 14th, 2009 at 9:24 am
  17. Christa, that is a good question. I think the title page or a chapter heading on your kindle is fine. Just don’t take it out in the cold. Those things break in freezing temperatures. My agent went through two of them.

  18. Ok, so I was quite annoyed when my “better half” left my hardback copy of the Painted Man on a plane… Now Im REALLY annoyed.

    Grr.

(would I stand a chance if my photo was in a library? I think not)

  19. No worries. I’m lucky if the weather dips below 40 down here (FL).

Posted by Christa, on December 15th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
  20. Paul, the judges will allow it.

Especially if you can get a librarian to shush you in the picture.

  21. Just to comfirm, super imposing the book into already existing pictures doesn’t count does it?

Posted by Dwayne, on December 15th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
  22. Dwayne, I’m not going to disqualify anyone for it, but it probably won’t have the same weight as someone who actually takes the book to the Great Wall of China or something.
