Cassie Hawkgirl Challenge Complete!

Posted by Meg

With her costume good to go and her main achievements unlocked, Cassie was all set for her superhero themed birthday party at the end of July.

To review, Cassie had to unlock a total of five challenges; each one completed awarded her with another piece to her Hawkgirl costume. But, if she couldn’t complete all the challenges before her birthday party, no costume! Luckily, Cassie pulled through, learning some important lessons along the way. To follow her entire journey, check out her other blog posts here.

Having her last costume-related challenge unlocked on Thursday, Cassie had all the elements for her costume ready on Sunday afternoon. She added her Batgirl utility belt for effect and entered her party in full super heroine gear!

Lots of other kids came in costume too, and even some of the adults.

Cassie’s BFF showed up as Blossom, with her Dad (@DJAyres) as Dr. Utonium and little sis as Bubbles, in one of the most adorable Powerpuff cosplays I’ve ever seen.

Matt (@D18Matt) showed up as Casual Galactus

While Peat dressed up as Captain Hammer!

The kids embarked on some pretty fun superhero training including trampoline jumping, balance beam walking and and taking a swinging kick off the bar.

After training, Cassie and her friends had to vanquish an evil super villain who wanted to eat all the birthday cake!

Cassie was awarded with some new gear: a light up stick that she can now add to her growing super heroine wardrobe. A successful birthday party all around.

ST Cover Contest: Blazing Ward

Posted by Meg

We’ve had some beautiful Skull Throne covers so far in the contest. And this one, by Dagmar from Germany, is no exception.

Here’s what he had to say about his cover:

I prefer simple and symbolic and not too detailed covers for books, so that’s what I designed. It shows a combat ward (my German The Great Bazaar-edition cites it as the heat-ward), because I expect the Skull Throne to be pretty martial (not sure if this is the right word ;-)). The yellow-orange-red colors in the background represent the heat (fire) of this ward and the increasing violence, tension and pressure of the fights and actions (that I expect 😉 ).

This is such a great example of how you can make a creative, striking cover without using a computer! I love the ward and the peek we get at the blazing colors behind it. Fantastic job, Dagmar.

The Road Goes Ever On and On: the Wheel of Time

Saturday 12:00 – 13:30, Capital Suite 14 (ExCeL)

With the final volume, A Memory of Light, published last year, and a Hugo nomination for the entire series this year, this seems the perfect time to look back on twenty-four years of the Wheel of Time. Our panel will reflect on Robert Jordan’s achievement in creating the series, its runaway success, Brandon Sanderson’s completion of the work, and the lasting influence of WoT on the fantasy genre.

Adam Whitehead (M), Wesley Chu, Harriet McDougal, Maria Simons, Peter V. Brett

Meet the New King, Same As The Old King

Saturday 19:00 – 20:00, Capital Suite 14 (ExCeL)

Why is fantasy so often about making the world better by getting the rightful king on the throne, rather than by doing away with monarchy entirely? Where are all the revolutions? Why don’t wizards use magic to create indoor plumbing and better infrastructure?

Juliet E McKenna (M), Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, Rjurik Davidson, Delia Sherman

These Are Not the Elves You’re Looking For

Sunday 18:00 – 19:00, Capital Suite 14 (ExCeL)

To what extent do modern fantasy novels play on readers’ familiarity – and fatigue – with genre tropes and conventions? For example, Andrzej Sapkowski, Justina Robson and Raymond E Feist have all created worlds in which the traditional Tolkienian model of benevolent, wiser-than-thou elves is challenged in various ways. Is deconstruction a new trend, or has genre fantasy been doing it for decades? How do recent debates about the cultural specificity of the English-language fantastic, and the lack of relevance of this aesthetic for audiences outside North America and the UK, affect our views of these issues?

Kate Heartfield (M), Peter V. Brett, Sarah Rees Brennan, Patrick Rothfuss, Yves Meynard

Be sure to check out the Appearances Page for the most up to date tour information.

And don’t forget to enter the Create Your Own Skull Throne Cover Contest to win the ultimate Demon Cycle book collection. Contest ends August 18, 2014.
