Incredible Warded Axe Worldbuilders Auction

Posted by Meg

Tait Stevens has been hard at work on something really special: this beautiful warded axe that will be available for bidding via this year’s auctions on Worldbuilders. The auction is live now and will end on February 2, 2014.

For those of you not familiar with Worldbuilders, it is a charity founded by fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss that supports Heifer International. You can read more about Worldbuilders and what they do here.

Also be sure to check the other amazing auctions happening right now. There are lots of signed books and manuscript consultations with loved fantasy authors and awesome editors. At the end of 2013, we ran auction for the final seat in the Author D&D game, which took place this past January at Legendary ConFusion.

This axe is gorgeous, and the perfect weapon to have at your ready when night falls and the demons rise.

The first ward (pictured above) is a impact ward, designed to give corelings a hefty shove back to the Core. On the alternate side (not pictured), you will find a cutting ward, perfect for slicing through demon armor.

The axe is in the style of a brush hatchet, but scaled up to just over 30″ in length and weighs several pounds.

Be sure to check out Tait’s other creative metalwork on his blog.

In keeping with an awesome tradition, Peat will be running the Author D&D event again this year at ConFusion. However, this year there will be a few changes.

Author D&D III

When: Saturday 9am-12pm

Where: The Great Room at Legendary ConFusion.

What: Watch eight fantasy authors and one fan play classic D&D. The game will run for roughly 3 hours. Afterwards, other authors at the con will take over and continue the game as long as possible.

Using Expletives

Stina Leicht, Seleste deLaney, Sam Sykes, Peter Brett, Doselle Young

1pm Saturday – Michigan

Swearing is fun. When done in fiction, it often humanizes characters who are otherwise a little too perfect. In SF/F, this can be tricky. One favorite is only a word at all because it was an acronym: Ship High In Transit, and came about because manure would cause sailing ships to explode. If a fantasy or sci-fi culture lacks those traditions, how do they swear? How does one make it recognizable and distinct?

Choose Your Own Augury

Ferrett Steinmetz, Cindy Spencer Pape, Wesley Chu, Peter Brett, Peter Orullian

6pm Saturday – Southfield

From perfect precognatives to imperfect entrail-readers everything in between, as well as today’s real life futurist, what are the challenges in predicting the future?

Writing Comics vs. Writing Novels

Bradley Beaulieu, Kelley Armstrong, Christine Purcell, Mike Carey, Peter Brett

8pm Saturday – Southfield

Different media present different challenges. Here we look at two popular forums and discuss similarities, differences, and what learning to do well in one may teach about the other.

You can always check out Peat’s whereabouts on the Appearances section of the website.

Legendary ConFusion: Author D&D III

Posted by Meg

What could be more awesome than eight fantasy authors and one generous fan playing D&D?

Playing in at a con with fans watching?

Filming the whole thing to share on Youtube?

Keep the game going by handing it off to other fantasy authors and fans?

Let’s do all three! Author D&D Part III is back this coming weekend at Legendary ConFusion in Detroit.

This year, we’ve got a seriously awesome line-up of authors to play three hours of filmed classic D&D: Cherie Priest, Wesley Chu, Kelley Armstrong, Sam Sykes, Myke Cole and Rich Morris with Peat debuting as DM along with Howard Taylor.

For the final player, we ran an auction via Worldbuilders, a charity founded by fantasy author and past Author D&D player Patrick Rothfuss. We did this last year as well with really fun results. Simon will be joining the other authors as the ninth player.

Oh, and I almost forgot the coolest part: Howard Taylor has hand painted minis for all the players. Check it out:

TheAD&DParty

L-to-R, Front-to-Back, we have Kelley, Mike, Rich; then Sam, Wes, Simon, and Cherie.

Lolth&TheDriders

Drow Goddess Lloth, the Spider Queen, and her minions, the Driders. It is she with which the players must contend.

For those of you attending Legendary ConFusion, the game will be held in The Great Room, so fans can watch. The game with start roughly around 9am and will run until noon this Saturday, January 18th. The game will be filmed, edited together and posted to Youtube later this year. We’ve done this the last two years. You can check out last year’s game below:

At noon, the game will continue with a new batch of authors to take over the (surviving) characters. The second round of players includes: Kameron HurleyBradley Beaulieu and Brian McClellan. Jason Utz will DM.

Fans are welcome to volunteer to play. The film crew will be gone, but feel free to take pictures and film to your heart’s content. It may end up in the final cut. Send all footage and pictures to pa@www.petervbrett.com.

Check out Peat’s other events this weekend here.
