Haiku Review Update!

Posted by Meg

Peat and I are having a blast reading through all the amazing Haiku Review entries that have been streaming in. We were so excited about all the kickass entries that we just had to share some of our favorites. Check it out.

From Joan:

Arlen from the North
Jardir from the Southern Sands
Who will deliver?

From Joe:

You must read it third
To grasp its complexity
But you’ll love its depth

Sentences so smooth
Characters with heart and soul
Writer Brett matures

Survivor’s guilt turns
To a greater cause to fight
Armies choose their sides

Deliverers chess
spotlight’s on Inevera
It ends at the cliff

From Jenny:

Find Kaji’s true heir
by the Hora’s glowing throw
or just make him so?

From Kayla:

Needed my Brett fix
Daylight War has cured my itch
Soon the end will come

The contest doesn’t end until Monday April 22nd, so get your entries locked on the orignal contest page.

Prizes include signed copies of The Daylight War and these one-of-a-kind Daylight War pins:

Can’t wait to see more poetic reviews filling up the comments!

Fan Art: Warded Game

Posted by Meg

Superfan Kym has been up to some pretty impressive stuff since the release of The Daylight War. You just need to check out her Deviant Art page to know that.

Recently, Peat received a package in the mail from Kym: a warded leather pouch containing nine warded wooden balls. And instructions to an entirely new game for warders!

Here’s how to play: (courtesy of Kym)

Warded balls for a simple game used by warders to practice their ward recognition skills, by sense of touch. In a game for two players each player selects one ball from the leather pouch and they check to see if it beats their opponent’s ball. The mind ward beats any other ward so a winning ward will eventually be selected by one player. In a variation of the same game, three warded balls are selected by each player and whoever has the stronger wards wins, the mind ward is a wild and beats any other ward.

Water > Fire

Fire > Wood

Wood > Swamp

Swamp > Rock

Rock > Wind

Wind > Snow

Snow > Lightning

Lightning > Water

Mind > beats any other ward

Want to see more beautiful and creative warded art from Kym? Of course you do.

Roundtable Podcast: What Makes a Good Antagonist?

Posted by Meg

Back in January at Immortal ConFusion in Detroit, Ben Delano from Roundtable Podcast went around asking fantasy/sci-fi authors the same question:

What is the ideal antagonist?

Along with Peat, Ben talked to Myke Cole, Jim C. Hines, Kat Howard and Carrie Harris.

Check out their answers on Wandering Around in CONfusion 2013 (pt I of II)

We’d like to here from you! What qualities do you consider essential in a villan? Let us know in the comments.
