Berlin Reading at the Otherland Bookshop

Posted by Meg

German fans, mark August 20, 2012 at 8PM on your calendars! Peat is headed to Berlin to do a reading at the Otherland Bookshop in Berlin, Germany.

Event Information

What: An evening with fantasy author Peter V. Brett that will include:

  • A discussion between Peter and his editor Sebastian from Heyne, Peat’s German Publisher
  • A reading from Das Flüstern der Nacht by a German actor
  • A short reading from the original English version read by Peter V. Brett
  • A Q&A with audience participation
  • A signing after the event
  • Admission is 3 euro
  • You can RSVP on Peat’s Facebook for this event

Where: The Otherland Bookshop (Buchhandlung)

Bergmannstr. 25 10961 Berlin

When: 8pm on August 20th, 2012

I have been perusing the Otherland Bookshop online, and it looks top notch. Dedicated mostly to science fiction and fantasy, they pull all the big titles from the big German publishers like Heyne (Peat’s publisher), but also have an excellent selection from smaller presses. They have novels in German as well as English. If you are attending the event, I would advise checking in early to do some shopping!

Peat is really excited to meet some of his German fans and hang out in what appears to be one of the coolest bookstores in Berlin.

In honor of Peat’s trip to Berlin, we will be running a German Warded Man and Desert Spear Giveaway. Visit the blog again soon to win your very own German versions of the beautifully illustrated Das Flüstern der Nacht (The Whispers of the Night).

Peat will also be in Poland for PolCon as a guest of honor. Check out the Appearances section of the News Page to keep up to date with Peat’s 2012 schedule.

Don’t forget to submit to Dating Ads Contest going on now. We have some really top notch entries so far, and we want to hear yours! Post your entry by July 27th at 11:59pm EST and check out the guidelines here.

New Arlen Fan Art

Posted by Meg

Check out these awesome Arlen portraits we found on Deviant Art. The first one was created by Herman Hans.

Our second portrait comes from The M Man. First check out his sketch of a rather young looking Arlen:

And now, the finished product.

Beautiful portraits! I love the detail of the wards on the first one and Arlen’s youthful expression on the second.

Want to win some fantastic prizes from Graphic Audio? Then head on over to the Dating Ads Contest to create your very own dating profile for your favorite (or least favorite!) Demon Cycle character. Cowboy T-Rex Battle

Posted by Meg

The epic Cowboy T-Rex Battle began with a simple request at Comic-Con. Fan Jeffrey Petersen (@JeffreyPetersen), wanting to get a little more out of the autograph experience, asked Myke Cole to draw a cowboy riding a T-Rex.

This was what Myke came up with …

Then, Peat got an email from Jeffrey with a more specific request:

Myke drew a cowboy riding a T-Rex on his bookplate. I’m not saying that this is a contest, but do you think you can top that?

And, of course by saying it wasn’t a contest, it became one. Peat brought some realism to his artwork and sent Jeffrey this:

What followed was Peat’s cry of victory as he re-tweeted Jeffrey.

Win. RT @JeffreyPetersen Sorry @MykeCole, but @PVBrett might have you in #CowboyTRexBattle Any authors want to join in? http://t.co/fPhjl3ks

Don’t forget to enter the Dating Ads Contest to win some seriously awesome prizes from Graphic Audio. Contest ends July 27th at 11:59pm EST so don’t hesitate! Check out the contest rules and entries here.

Summer Reads

Posted by Meg

Whether you are sprinting off to the beach to cool off or just sitting back in your air conditionned room, summer is a great time to get started on a new series … or get wrapped up in an old one.

The Warded Man was named one of the top 5 summer reads in a post by Bryan Thomas Schmidt, the host of sffwrtcht (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer’s Chat). You can check out the transcript of Peat’s Twitter interview with Bryan here.

Peat was also on the Up and Coming Top Fantasy Shelf on 20SomethingReads.com and was picked by Charlaine Harris (author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels) a “under the covers” sizzling summer read! Check out what she has to say about The Warded Man and her full list of summer picks here.

This got me wondering what Peat’s favorite summer reads were. Maybe if we find some truly thrilling new books, winter will get here sooner (and with it, The Daylight War!)

So here is what Peat is reading this summer:

So what are you waiting for? Let’s get reading!

Dating Ads Contest

Posted by Meg

Rebecca gets most of the credit for writing this post, but I thought the contest was such a stellar idea, I wanted to run it.

So last year, Peter asked for suggestions for a contest that he could do on the blog. While some people would be content to choose just one of the suggestions, we had to sample some of the other ones; there were so many great ones to choose from. Much like me when I go into a library or a bookstore.

This contest was inspired by Mia. Check out how awesome Mia is here.

The challenge is to write a personal dating ad profile for one of the characters from the Demon Cycle world. It could be like those that you would see in newspapers (like the one in the “If You Like Pina Coladas” song), or it could be like the ones you would see people posting on various dating sites. For example, for Arlen, you might write:

Mysterious, brooding male, early 20s, into tats, horses, moonlight strolls, martial arts, weaponry and travel. Seeks unconventional, outdoorsy female, in touch with her demonic side. (Credit goes to Mia for this one.)

Here are the rules:

1. Come up with a dating profile for any character from Peter’s books. The profile doesn’t have to be in the above format; for instance, you could take the profile questions from Match.com or Okcupid.com and then answer them for the characters.

2. Post the ads in the comment section of this blog post.

3. You may enter as many times as you would like.

4. You have 2 weeks from today to enter. Post your entry before 11:59 PM United States Eastern time on July 27, 2012.

5. Prizes will be Graphic Audio CDs, T-shirts and signed posters.

I’m hoping to see some hilarious entries on some of more obscure characters. (If I don’t see one for Abban I will be sorely disappointed in you all.)

But seriously, have fun kids and good luck.
