Fan Art Contest: Wards and Demons

Posted by Meg

When it comes to combining creative talents, fan Birte Widman is a pro. She took on not one but three characters during the last Cosplay Contest. And then, just for good measure, she sent in her Arlen Cosplay. Make sure you check out her other amazing contributions, both artistic and musical: two original tracks inspired by The Warded Man as well as some beautiful cover art.

As her submission to the Fan Art Contest, Birte combines her original music and mural art to tell a unique Demon Cycle story.

Here is what Birte had to say:

Hello Peat,

I’ve been composing music that describes the shape of these wards and their function. As there was a lot to do, I only managed to write down the music of five defensive wards: water demon, flame demon, wind demon, sand demon and snow demon (which I simply had to add, as it is winter right now).

The idea behind the composition is that, once you have a theme you can basically do anything with it: You can orchestrate it in countless ways, you can put it into another key, to combine it with another theme, in short create a musical demonattack storyline for any given situation. For Example: a flame demon runs towards the wards, but is thrown back by a rock demon that wants to be there first. A wind demon drops from the sky and intends to enter the protective circle, but the wards throw it back and it collides with a fellow wind demon etc…

In this particular composition I left the themes mostly unchanged and only worked on their variation a little. Instead I concentrated on the orchestration of these. That was due to a lack of time on the one hand and on the other it was the first orchestration of this music and it was easier to change less, but to turn my piano sketch into a musical piece that would sound whole.

Listen to her beautiful composition as you look the different parts of her mural and follow along with her story.

Now to the piece in detail: As always there is a basic storyline.

Night falls over Thesa. The last bell rings and soon the corelings rise from the core and begin to stalk the earth.

A man sleeps in a well protected ward circle.

A horde of flame demons spy him and run towards the suspected prey, spitting fire and making crackling noises. The wards work and throw them back. A wind demon drops from the sky and wants to carry the man away. Only the faint beat of its massive wings warns of its arrival, but the wards throw it back as well. The man has set up his camp by the shore of a lake and there is a water demon that has spied his blurred form above the water. The rippling water announces its coming and soon it tries to catch that human with its tongue, but bounces off the wards. Its attempts remain fruitless. The circle is well warded.

There is a man in the desert as well. A messenger, lost on his way and weak from a lack of food and water. He has collapsed within a hastily put up portable circle. A pack of sand demons, that roam around old travellers roads, have picked up the man’s trail. Running over the dunes they followed his scent and now they spy him in his circle. They start attacking the wards. They can feel that the net, that throws them back, is not very strong. It would not hold for ever…

Far up in the icy mountains, another messenger has set up his camp under an overhanging rock that is covered in icicles. His horse’s breath forms white clouds in the freezing air. A heavy snowfall sets in and the snow scrunches beneath the horses hoofs as it moves. But the horse is not the only creature moving. The low growl of a predator sounds over the snow. Though the man has heard stories told about these corelings of ice, he had never truly believed in them. He knows that his circle doesn’t contain the defensive ward he needs. His only chance is his shield: His friends had wanted to mock him by painting said ward on in bright ink. He only spots the demon as it moves and the firelight reflects off its icy white scales; otherwise the demon is invisible in the snow. Though there is little hope, the messenger holds up his shield and stands at the very edge of the circle. The demon attacks. The horse flees as the horny tail of the coreling rips open its flank. Several times the demon is thrown back by the ward, but the man knows that he cannot stand this brutal fight much longer; the day is still hours away and he has been on his feet in the thin mountain air all day. Finally the demon manages to get past his wards and pulls away his shield. The messenger pays dearly for his disbelief in the old stories about the death of the mountain, the snow demon.

Musically, I sort of composed along this line, only flowering it at the very end after the appearance of the snow demon, with a last confusing mixture of all the wards at the same time, mixing the themes and pushing them to the climax. Besides the music there are also some sounds. I wanted to create the feeling of really sensing the situation. For example you can hear the growl of the snowdemon, the flapping of the wind demon’s wings and the rippling water as the waterdemon tests the wards. But also the crunching snow, the rustling of sand and the crackling of the flame demons’ approach. I hope you like it. As I said, you can basically do anything with the themes I found for the wards. This is the first possibility.

Greetings Birte

Birte also created these excellent snow demons out of real snow! A perfect entry idea for a winter art contest.

Wow! Thank you to Birte for entering with such spectacular artwork and music. I love how the music, words and mural all tell a story. Amazing job!

Fan Art Contest: Twilight Dancer

Posted by Meg

Here is a beautiful entry to the Fan Art Contest from Carol, who has consistently sent in awesome things to Peat. During the Cosplay Contest, we got to see her as Renna and as Inevera. She also impressed us with her Homemade Heroes Contest entry and her Warding Contest entry, where she warded her own skin with kick-ass tattoos!

Carol’s entry to the Fan Art Contest is no exception to the rule. Her simple sketch of Twilight Dancer, the Warded Man’s horse, is stunning. Here’s what she had to say about it:

Would have loved to send in more entries for this but work is getting in the way of fun!

I have been very old fashioned and tried a pencil sketch of Twilight Dancer.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year,

Carol

Thank you to Carol for entering. The detail of the wards on Twilight Dancer’s armor is wonderful. Great work!

Fan Art Contest: A Messenger’s Journal

Posted by Meg

Here is a different sort of entry to the Fan Art Contest: a fan fiction sent in by Polish fan Andrzej.

Hello.

I hope it is not too late to join the fan art contest that was announced on
your web page. I’ve seen some of the entries you posted on the website and
I doubted that I had any kind of a chance but I used my own creativity and
ideas and created a short piece of writing within the world of the Warded
Man.

I hope to see a Polish translation of the next book as soon as it can be.

Best wishes

Andrzej

Thank you for entering! I love the idea for creating a journal format for a messenger to use. Very realistic! Great work, Andrzej.

A Messenger’s Journal

332 AR Day 1

The first night on the road is always the worst one, especially after such a long brake as I had. This time I have to go to Krasia with a bunch of letters from the Euchor, I don’t suppose they will be glad to see me once more. As much disrespect they have for other people staying at night behind their houses wards, they maybe do not hate the Messengers but they call us as all others by the name chin. I don’t know how long will the travel from Miln take but I suppose it might take a long five weeks in one way. The corelings are once again rising, this night will be as always, lonely from one point of view and occupied from the other one. I better get a good nights sleep while I am not disturbed too much by the explosions of magic.

332 AR Day 10

The journey is going quite smoothly. I had a few short stops in smaller villages but nothing that took more then just one night in a bed. As always I double checked both the outer and the inner ring of wards protecting the camp with my horse and the carriage, and the inner ring protecting my own campfire and sleeping place. It has been a few days since I heard or seen the rock demons, but I suppose there are some of them close to my camp, like they were hunting me and trying to see if I ever make the mistake of not checking my runes. I know this might seem weird but I have a strange feeling about the lack of those big bastards.

332 AR Day 12

I just knew it, the rock demons came last night and tried to break through the outer ring, but I always keep it well polished so the wards keep their full power. I always hated those big beasts, the sole knowledge that those live just outside of Miln makes the people of Fort Miln shake their legs in fear. To tell the truth I fell worried of their sudden come back, but at the same time I feel relived, at least now I know they are there waiting for me to make even the smallest mistake. There is at the least three of them, but there can be more outside of my field of vision. Hope I can get a good night sleep.

332 AR Day 20

This is getting worse with every night, I feel like I’m going nuts. Today while I was rushing through the woods I nearly thought I’ve seen a demon in the daylight, but it was not the usual tree demon or fire demon, this seemed to be more human like but with a gigantic head. I don’t know if I’m imagining things or not, but it would seem that I do. A coreling during the day time? I never even thought that would be possible, but how could it survive? No there is no chance for this to be happening. I really need to get some more sleep then yesterday.

332 AR Day 21

I don’t know what is happening as of late, for the past five years of me working as a Messenger I never seen the demons act so strange as they did yesterday. But it was not only the demons, I nearly crossed the outer ring, but I have no idea what happened with me! I never did something so reckless as this, not even when I tried to protect the cargo from some thieves. I really need to get some sleep today, if not I’ll need to get some more of those herbs.

332 AR Day 29

When I finally got to the desert I somewhat felt relieved by the thought that I would never see those damned rock demons, but on the other hand I had the smaller sand demons to deal with. Even if smaller then the rock demons and much weaker, they attack in packs making them even more annoying, but the past few nights I felt that I was attracting them to me, or to the letters I had with me. I don’t know what is happening and right now I think that if this keeps up I’ll become insane.

332 AR Day 30

This is going to be a journey longer then it should have been, I should have already passed the oasis on the way to Krasia but I have not seen it yet and this makes me feel nervous. The worst thing that can happen is me getting lost in the middle of this damned desert. During the days it is too hot to think, and my water and food supplies are getting really low. I need to find that oasis and fast so I won’t die. Right now I’m not even thinking about the order from the Euchor.

332 AR Day 35

This request is just getting worse and worse, with getting really low on my water supplies I stepped out of the outer circle at night. I got wounded really badly, those might be my last words, the demons are roaring and I feel the fever coming to me. I think I can see somebody and the wound is burning me, one of those sand demons hit my left leg with its claws and nearly tore it off. I feel the very loss of blood made me too weak to fight off the fever. I need to get some sleep, my eyelids are very heavy and I feel sleepy.

332 AR Day 36

This is it, I woke up with the demons surrounding the inner circle, looking for any weak points in the barrier. I slept through the whole day out in the sun, I feel my whole body burning. The wound on my leg started to smell really bad, and now I know I must be imagining things, a demon that is smaller then the sand demons is looking at what is happening really close behind. Ah the pain, it is overwhelming. I don’t know what will become of me, but if anybody finds this journal, say my wife in Miln, Cathrine, that I love her.

332 AR Day 37

The sun is going down, it is getting darker and darker and the mist started to appear, this is it. The runes have been covered by sand, I had no strength to move and to try to clear them off. I can barely hold my quill while writing those last words, the very same demon I described about sixteen days ago, I can see it. It is staring at me, at my head. The terrible pain, now even my head feels like it will explode, the claws, the burning feeling on my hea.

Bloody stains remain on this last page of a Messengers journal, found about a hundred years after his death in the desert when people tried to establish a new way to reach fort Krasia. Found by chance by a group of travelers who were exploring the desert. The whole camp has been found only by chance when they saw a piece of wood protruding from the sand, they found the remains of a dead person with what seemed to be a piece of skull missing from the top.

Fan Art Contest: Warded Calendar

Posted by Meg

As you can see, this entry to the Fan Art Contest has a perfect New Years theme. A 2012 warded calendar from Margherita! You will remember Margherita from winning the most recent Cosplay Contest. It’s great to see another excellent entry from her! Here is what she had to say:

Hey Peat,

Happy New Year to you and the family! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. 🙂

I hope you get this in good time. I’ve been so rushed, but I didn’t want to give it up. Not sure if anyone has sent in a similar entry, but I figured a good way to start the New Year is with a 2012 calendar. I made a calendar of wards. I tried to allocate some of the wards appropriately. You’ll notice December is a snow ward, July a sand ward, April a water ward (April showers), even October is a mimic ward (imitating someone/something for Halloween). I even included the moon phases for each month. I had planned to do so much more with it, but I lacked the time. Please ignore any mess ups you might come across :s.

Thanks for constantly keeping your fans involved. It’s always fun. 😀

Margherita

Moon Phases Detail

Superb job! I love how all the months have a pertinent ward, and they are all beautifully executed. Thanks to Margherita for entering with such a creative and unique idea!

Here are the rest of the months …
