Signed Bookplates

SignedPlate_webApologies for the delay on this post, I know I’ve been promising it for a while. As I’ve noted in some recent posts, things have been pretty busy lately with both The Great Bazaar and The Warded Man MMPB publishing this month, and The Desert Spear only a week away in the UK, and two weeks away here in the states.

Busy Bee.

But to be honest, there was another reason, as well. I wanted to experiment with postage costs and delivery times a bit before promising anything. A handful of readers, people from all over the world, requested plates after my original post. It was a really good sampling, and I decided to use them as a test group. I am now pretty confident that I have a good system in place to fulfill requests.

So.

I have 500 signed bookplates to give away. You can read all about the plates in my original post about them a few weeks back.

As I keep reminding everyone, The Desert Spear is going on sale next month, and I want you (yes, you) to have a signed copy, even if you won’t be able to make it to any of my upcoming signings. Here’s how we can make that happen:

Step 1: Send an e-mail to bookplates@www.petervbrett.com with “Bookplate Request” as the subject line. In the body of the e-mail, please include your name and mailing address so we know where to send it. If you want me to personalize the plate, please let me know who to make it out to. The bookplates come at no charge, including postage. My gift to you.

EDIT: Please also include a personal note so we know you are a true fan. Something as simple as: Arlen is my favorite character or I love the books and just bought The Warded Man for my brother. For more information check out the most recent post about bookplates.

Step 2: Wait a couple of weeks. Possibly more if you live in Fiji or something. Receive your bookplate in the mail.

Step 3: Take your copy of The Desert Spear (which by then you will know is the best book ever).

Step 4: Open the book and fold back the jacket on the inside front (or back, your preference) cover.

Step 5: Crack and peel the sticker back of the bookplate.

Step 6: Carefully adhere to the inside cover of the book.

Step 7: Admire your handiwork. Fret over whether you centered it just right.

Step 8: Enjoy your autographed copy!

Braaaiiiiinnnnnsssss…

BestofallfleshWhile my buddy Myke Cole, winner of the 2003 Writers of the Future award for his story Blood and Horses is busy putting the finishing touches on a novel sure to knock people’s socks off, he’s asked me in the meantime to mention that the recent Best of All Flesh zombie anthology includes his short story, Shouting Down the Moon, which I did beta-reads and edits on, way back when. In his words:

Shouting Down the Moon is a twist on paranormal romance – the Zombie love story, set on the African Savannah. A grieving lover joins her tribe mining for the gold they desperately need to finance their defenses. All depends on silence, as the mines are overrun by ravenous monsters drawn by the slightest sound. A sudden noise would mean the end of them, but a love that reaches beyond the grave may prove their salvation.

The anthology, edited by James Lowder (whose Forgotten Realms novels I used to read as a kid) also includes some other notable authors such as Tobias Buckell, Scott Edelman, Ed Greenwood, and Jim C. Hines. More about it on Suvudu.

Desert Messenger

Oh, yeah. That’s what I like to see. Work it for the camera, baby…

Desert_Messenger_web

That’s right, I finally got some US samples to share with friends and family. I will be giving some away on the blog, as well, but I doubt I will have time to do it before the looming launch date. Things are very very busy in the PVB world these days.

In other news, I finally received my copy of King of RPGs, by Jason Thompson. Some of you may remember the Live Online RPG I played a couple of months ago with Jason as Dungeonmaster. Good times.

Goody Bag

Lots going on at the moment. Partially by planning and partially by happenstance, there is currently a flood of new PVB material these days. I am going to try and call some of it out quickly before things pile up overmuch, so I can get back to The Daylight War later this afternoon without a sense panic that my inbox is starting to overflow.

warded_man_mmpb_cover_web_smThe Warded Man MMPB released yesterday, and my while I think my carefully plotted wards all activated properly, the drain on the grid might have affected the weather. The sky was overcast yesterday morning as my agent and I embarked on our quest to sign every book we could find in Manhattan and Brooklyn in a single day, sunup to sundown. I had 200 signed bookplates in my pocket, along with the signing pens my mother gave me a couple of years ago. Joshua had a backpack full of xeroxed press reviews about the book, and paperback samples to give as gifts to any bookstore staff who expressed an interest in reading fantasy to keep or just leave in their break rooms.

We started out in Park Slope Brooklyn at the 7th Avenue Barnes and Noble, where they had eight copies in stock, but they had just arrived, and were not yet shelved. This is one of the main reasons authors should do this sort of thing on release day. There were probably ten stores we visited over the course of the day that had not yet shelved the books.

I want to be clear that this is not the fault of the stores or their employees, at least not at the ground level. In most cases, the books (which the store had ordered months in advance) had been delivered that very day, or just the night before. Stores receive a lot of books in these shipments, and it takes time to inventory and shelve them all. Most stores shelve the bestsellers first (as any smart business should), and in places without a lot of staff, it can take days to get around to a new author like me.

But by coming in and introducing ourselves to the staff, we were not only able to have the books shelved immediately with good facing, but made even more enticing by the “Author signed” stickers now adorning the front. I slipped a signed bookplate into every copy, so that any readers who enjoy the book enough to want to buy The Desert Spear (Free excerpt with that link!) in April will be able to peel off the sticker backing, and, PRESTO! make their new hardcover into a signed book.

From Park Slope we went to another couple of stores in Brooklyn, and then took the subway into Manhattan, starting out on Wall Street at the Borders down there, and then making a zig-zaggy loop up the east side of the island and then going crosstown at the top and zig-zagging back down the west. We visited 20 bookstores in all, and I signed 108 books, plus another half dozen that we gave to store staff, bringing the total up to 114. We met a lot of great, hard working, and friendly store staff & customers, and had fun geeking out about books with them. It was also an opportunity to thank the floor workers for what they do. I used to manage a comic shop, and know how difficult a job retail sellers have. And they usually do it with a cheery smile.

It was a great day, but even after a night’s rest, my feet are still killing me.

Did I mention that the MMPB has an exclusive Desert Spear excerpt not available online at the back?

great_bazaar_cover_thumb2Also in the news is The Great Bazaar. Subterranean Press reports that there are only about 75 copies of the trade version left, and the limited edition is already sold out. It is unlikely these books will last much longer, and there are no plans to go back on press. If you are at all interested, I strongly suggest you order soon. I love that little book dearly, and consider it’s events Canon that give real depth to some of my favorite characters in the series.

Not convinced? Check out what Blood of the Muse has to say about The Great Bazaar.

Desert_Spear_US_web_smLast but not least, there is some more news on The Desert Spear:

Aidan Moher has posted a New Exclusive Desert Spear Excerpt on his blog A Dribble of Ink. I know that people wanted some Arlen/Leesha/Rojer action, so I came through this time around with a delicious appetizer for that. Check it out.

There have also been some great new reviews popping up, now that the release date is looming. The Superfast Reader follows up the interview we did a few weeks ago with this review.

Other glowing reviews appearing, like this one from Library Journal, or:

“…Those willing to give Jardir his due will see him develop depth and perspective that give his inevitable confrontation with Arlen magnitude. This more brutal sequel emphasizes political and romantic intrigue without losing the urgency of the demon war.”

-Booklist

“…Well-drawn characters, fascinating worldbuilding, action and conflict make for an exciting page-turner.”

* * * * 1/2

-Romantic Times

Finally, Recorded Books has announced the upcoming audio book of The Desert Spear, which will again feature the talented narrator Pete Bradbury, whose silken rumble of a voice could charm the panties off a marble statue of Athena. His reading of The Warded Man is available now, and it’s fantastic.

Mass Market Magics

warded_man_mmpb_cover_webBig day tomorrow. After what seems like an eternity, the Mass Market Paperback (MMPB) of The Warded Man finally goes on sale in the US & Canada.

Long have I waited for this day, as my literary firstborn is sown far and wide on my native soil. Hidden away in my Hobbit Hole, safe from prying eyes, I have drawn ancient wards to harness deepest Core magic and cast good fortune upon March 23, 2010. Children born or conceived on this day will be smarter, healthier, and better behaved. Orgasms will be twice as powerful, curling even the limberest toes until they cramp.

Marriage proposals on March 23, 2010 will not fail. Good turns to your neighbor will be returned tenfold. That cold you feel coming on will not manifest. Even the worst of farts will smell sweeter, and your back will only itch in places you can easily scratch. All your endeavors will have +4 to initiative.

To celebrate, my agent and I are taking the day off to visit bookstores all over Brooklyn and Manhattan to meet the fine folks working there and sign the books they have in stock and (so long as the stores let me) insert a signed bookplate you can put in your copy of The Desert Spear, should you like the book enough to want to continue the series. If you live in Brooklyn or Manhattan and want a signed book, they should be all over town on Wednesday. A little personal thank you to anyone who buys the book.

I am going to keep a number of bookplates in my satchel at all times, and whenever I’m out of town, I will try and do the same at the local stores wherever I go. Who knows? Maybe my Johnny Appleseed journeys will bring me to a store near you!
