NY ComicCon, Day 2

nycomiccon2009day2

If the first day of ComicCon was surreal, the second was an acid trip down a chocolate river on a marshmallow boat with gumdrop mushrooms growing along the shore. Andy Warhol once said that everyone would get fifteen minutes of fame, and if this was mine, it was about a thousand times more than I ever imagined it would be.

The day started out much like Friday, with me and my webmaster Dave Wenk and my buddy Matt Bergin wandering the aisles and breathing in the sweet musk of our fellow nerds. Here’s my photojournal of the morning, and then I’ll get into the fantastic events of the afternoon:

nycomiccon2009day2-005a

As usual, sexy Batgirls were out in force, all of them showing love for The Warded Man.

nycomiccon2009day2-006a

Elf needs food… badly.

nycomiccon2009day2-007a

In full-on Fallout 3 action, the Warded Man badge gets the drop on The Steel Remains. Of course.

nycomiccon2009day2-008a

This might be my favorite picture from the entire con. The only thing better might have been Vader… or the Fett.

nycomiccon2009day2-010a

You may recognize the two people above. They were dressed as Robin and Batgirl the day before. Looks like they got a dose of Joker gas and switched sides. I snapped a quick pic and ran off when Joker offered to show me a magic trick where he makes a pencil disappear.

nycomiccon2009day2-011a

Rorschach was on hand to creep out the ladies with his stalker/flasher vibe, but his TWM badge redeemed him. Ladies love The Warded Man.

nycomiccon2009day2-014a

Case in Point: Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, everyone’s favorite bi-curious supervillaness duo. They stopped on their way to pulling a bank job to pose for a quick snapshot.

nycomiccon2009day2-012a

Amazing ward artist Lauren Cannon AKA Navate was on hand on Saturday. She’s best known for designing wards, but don’t forget this INCREDIBLE portrait she did of The Warded Man himself. Lauren was PISSED that she was stuck with a Steel Remains badge after all the work she did on design for The Warded Man. There ain’t no justice, I tell ya.

nycomiccon2009day2-016a

My new buddy author Robert VS Redick did a signing at the Del Rey booth, and I was able to snag an advance copy of his new book, The Red Wolf Conspiracy. Like me, his book came out in the UK last year, but has yet to drop in the homeland. Look for it in April!

nycomiccon2009day2-020a

GL and Jade used their power rings to ensure they got Warded Man badges, despite all the yellow in the design. Good to know those things are good for something.

nycomiccon2009day2-021a

Another batch of Bat-villains were on hand to pose. I think I saw maybe one Batman, but half a dozen Joker and Harley clones. The caped crusader had his work cut out for him. Thankfully, there were no less than a dozen Batgirls on hand to assist (or distract, depending on your point of view).

nycomiccon2009day2-025a

Poor Jessica Rabbit. was stuck with a Steel Remains badge, and she wasn’t happy about it. I think she deserved better. She’s not bad, she’s just drawn that way. I tried to get her to play a round of patty-cake with me, but you can see Matt and Lauren waiting impatiently in the background, and I had to run.

nycomiccon2009day2-026a

Jessica’s pals were another Joker/Harley/Ivy gang. If Harley looks familiar, it’s because she was dressed as Daisy Mae the day before. She was sweet enough to put up with my nonsense and pose again in her new costume.

nycomiccon2009day2-027a

Black Canary looked ready to do a sonic-wail in her grief over having a Steel Remains badge. I pity the next criminal she comes across. Equally unhappy was… what’s her name? She’s from Street Fighter, right? It’s funny, I can picture the video game character perfectly, but I’m blanking on the name.

nycomiccon2009day2-028a

This one’s for my buddy Myke in Iraq. AMERICANS support The Warded Man, and not that Scottish Steel Remains nonsense. Who can finish the following sentence without googling the answer? “When Captain America throws his mighty shield…”

nycomiccon2009day2-032a

Waiting outside room 1A21 for the Fantasy Authors Roundtable panel featuring yours truly, my buddy Neil, who was reading early drafts of The Warded Man back in like 2002 and telling me (quite rightly) why they sucked, shows his displeasure at a Steel Remains badge.

I was nervous as hell about the roundtable. I’ve only been on a couple of con panels in the past, and this was by far the biggest, with hundreds of people in the room, to the point of standing room only. Also, the table wasn’t round at all. It was totally rectangular.  John Birmingham, S. C. Butler, Peter Brett , Kim Harrison, Alex Irvine, Jackie Kessler, Vicki Pettersson, Tamora Pierce, Jeff Somers, and Carrie Vaughn made up the panel. To help my nerves, I settled in between my con-buddies Sam Butler and Jeff Somers, who helped me breathe deeply:

panel_pic

The only other person I knew on the panel was the ever-delightful and lovely Jackie Kessler, who was seated waaay on the other end by Tamora Pierce. Jackie’s upcoming book from Bantam Press, Black & White, is another advance read copy I picked up at the con, along with Jeff Somers’ The Digital Plague from Orbit. I still need to track down Sam’s books.

Another thing that really helped me keep my cool was the fact that a HUGE number of my friends and family turned out for the panel to show support. It was amazing to look out at the crowd and see so many friendly faces, including a few high school friends I hadn’t seen since 1991, reunited thanks to the wonders of facebook.

At ten panelists plus the moderator Shawn Speakman, with only 60 minutes to the panel, things were a bit crowded to say the least. My opening joke about how I had lost my name badge and wondered if anyone had found it (since half the audience was wearing a badge with my name on it) totally bombed. Seriously. Not even a pity laugh. I didn’t think there would be crickets in the Javits Center in the middle of the day, but I swear I could hear them.

I rallied, though, and I think I came off generally lucid. You’ll be able to see for yourself when Suvudu gets around to posting the video of the panel (hop to it, Shawn!).

It looked like a lively debate was brewing (with a load of angry TP fans in attendance ready to tear me apart), but then the time was up. Saved by the bell.

Next up was my signing at the Del Rey booth, with hundreds of free Warded Man ARCs on hand:

twm_arcs

Not to mention kickass temporary ward tattoos:

temp_tattoos

More of my peeps showed up as well, including:

nycomiccon2009day2-034a

Brian and Karin had the boo-boo face badges, but Lauren used her feminine wiles to charm a Warded Man badge off some guy on his way home from the con.

nycomiccon2009day2-048a

Photographer extraordinaire Amelia D’entrone, who took my book jacket photo, also had a TWM badge, along with her son Luca the Palooka.

nycomiccon2009day2-069a

The Force is strong with you, young Luca, but you are not a Jedi yet!

nycomiccon2009day2-042a

Of course, the beautiful red-headed darling Cassandra Brett was on hand as well, and was among the first to grab a copy of the book to read in her carriage while daddy did his signing.

nycomiccon2009day2-043a

The signing was the day before my 36th birthday, so my friend Matt, who had been secretly carrying a cake (with frosting wards!) around all day, whipped out the delicious chocolate confection and got everyone to sing “Happy Birthday”. I thought my heart might actually burst with joy.

nycomiccon2009day2-045a

Here’s me signing books next to the cake, which Matt then cut and served to the guests in the line. People came in droves. Who doesn’t want free cake?

nycomiccon2009day2-056a

Matt Made surte to snag a slice for himself.

nycomiccon2009day2-045ab

Here’s a nice shot of the crowd at the signing. You can just make out my friends Jon, Nancy, Fotini, and Jay.

nycomiccon2009day2-058a

Cassie might love daddy, but she did not love the crowd and noise. Luckily, mommy was on hand to calm her down.

nycomiccon2009day2-070a

Even Ghostbusters and Peter Parker love TWM.

The signing was scheduled to last for half an hour, but even after the cake ran out, people kept coming and coming. I wound up signing for over 90 minutes. The whole time I was on an incredible adrenaline high, overjoyed to meet people, shake hands, and talk about the book. When the last book was signed, though, it was like my strings had been cut, and I crashed hard. I almost fell asleep in the bar afterwards.

suemoe_peat

I perked back up later, though, when SueMoe and I started discussing Robert Jordan’s obsession with writing about Aes Sedai spanking each other.

Seriously. Look it up. I wonder if Brandon Sanderson will continue that theme as he finishes off the Wheel of Time.

More pix to come as I post about Day 3! Look for it!

Before I get to my second NY ComicCon post, I just wanted to throw up a quickie to note that I have a new interview posted on Aidan Moher’s blog A Dribble of Ink. Unlike most interviews, where I am sent a list of questions, answer them, and that’s it, Aidan and I went back and forth a bit, which I think resulted in a more in depth interview than many others. If you’re interested, check it out.

Also, there have been a few new reviews of The Warded Man (AKA The Painted Man) floating around the internets recently, all of them quite positive. Check out Mark Yon’s review on SFFWorld, or click on over to Realms of Speculative Fiction and see Thrinidir’s review. There’s also a good review now up on The Blog of the Fallen.

NY ComicCon Day 1

n629408980_1402379_9773Apologies for the delay in posting about this incredible weekend, but the joy and the anxiety and the exhaustion set in and I needed a day to recuperate.  The next few posts will also be picture-heavy, so I was up rather late last night resizing pictures for the web.

Overall, it was an incredible weekend. As a life-long comic book geek, I’ve been going to comic conventions since I was 12. That’s… ye gods, 24 years. Did I mention I turned 36 on Sunday?

The Warded Man badges at ComicCon seemed to have a magical effect on people, with those who got them looking deleriously happy, and those who got the Richard K. Morgan The Steel Remains badges seeming rather sad. I first noticed this phenomenon with my good friend Fotini, who first got a TSR badge, but was then able to switch to a TWM. Check out the before and after shots:

boo-boo_foa happy_fo_a

This was a theme throughout the weekend, as photo evidence will show.

I arrived at the convention at 10am on Friday with nothing scheduled and a full day to wander. The line to pick up commercial badges was quite short, was heartening, but when I went downstairs to pick up my professional badge, I was in for something of a surprise. It took me ten minutes just to WALK TO THE END OF THE LINE. It was a bizarre feeling, so see people walking two and fro wearing badges with my name and book on them, and me waiting in line for 45 minutes, alone, waiting for a blank white card that said “Peter V. Brett, Speaker” on it.

I finally got inside and check in with my buddy/partner in crime/evil twin Jay Franco, editor at large, who was working the Titan Books booth, hawking Watchmen and Tank Girl books. I then headed over to the Del Rey booth, where there was an awesome poster of my book cover, which they asked me to sign:

nycomiccon2009day1-002a

This was followed by a video interview with Suvudu that I stuttered through, talking about 1,000 words a minute. I have a feeling I sounded like a speed freak, but it was really just nerves. I was a bundle of them this weekend. They should be posting the vid soon, and hopefully they can slow the tape down to make me intelligible, like they have to do with the Flash sometimes.

After that, I met up with my high school friend Kim, who I hadn’t seen in like 10 years, but who I learned would be at the con via the wonders of facebook. More on that in the next post. It was great to see her, and we wandered the con a bit more before splitting up. I spent most of the rest of the day just walking around with a huge smile on my face, taking pictures. Have a look:

nycomiccon2009day1-003a

The guy on the right the crazy robot from Transformers: The Movie (the awesome animated one, not the steaming turd Shia LeBeouf vehicle). The TSR badge must have driven him over the edge. I’m not sure who the other guy is supposed to be, but his badge makes it clear he is a man of refinement and taste.

nycomiccon2009day1-004a

I’m getting old, because I have no idea who these kids are dressed as. The guy on the left has kind of a Clockwork Orange thing going on. Whatever, though. They are down with TWM.

nycomiccon2009day1-006a

Another costume I couldn’t identify. I am seriously losing my touch. Same goes for the next two.

nycomiccon2009day1-007a

This guy’s nose studs kept falling out. I though his girlfriend was in costume, too, but it turns out she was just wearing a sexy shiny dress. Show’s what I know.

nycomiccon2009day1-008a

Couldn’t identify these kids either, but they had weapons, so I left it at that.

nycomiccon2009day1-009a

I love this pic. The Bat-sidekicks are happily down with The Warded Man, but the Force was apparently not with the jedi, who got stuck with The Steel Remains.

nycomiccon2009day1-010a

The guys looked fantastic, but I felt kind of bad for them, glued into those heavy rubber suits all day. It must have been hot as balls. Hellboy couldn’t even talk through all the plastic.

nycomiccon2009day1-012a

This chick had an amazing Cry For Dawn costume that must have taken forever to make. She is holding up a Warded Man badge, though it is hard to tell because you’re distracted by the… uh… comics in the background. Dawn was super nice, though, as were her compatriots:

nycomiccon2009day1-013a

I think Captain Morgan was Dawn’s boyfriend. His costume (and con badge) was awesome. Poor little Shadowcat, though, was sad that she had only a cruddy Steel Remains badge. Awww, don’t cry, Kitty! It will be ok. Lockheed will torch that badge for you later.

nycomiccon2009day1-014a

Cutie pie Daisy Mae Scragg was all about The Warded Man, too. Li’l Abner got jealous because she left him behind in Dogpatch. Daisy was having a blast at the con, and we saw her running up to other people to compliment their costumes. ComicCon brings out the best in all of us.

nycomiccon2009day1-015a

These two had a third compatriot who was too embarrassed to make a frowny face over his Steel Remains badge. He was cross-dressing in a giant day-glo wig and makeup, but making a boo-boo face embarrassed him. Ah, ComicCon! You draw all kinds!

nycomiccon2009day1-017a

Black Cat took some time away from teasing innocent Spider-man to pose for a picture with her TWM badge.

nycomiccon2009day1-018a

Snake-eyes was looking as awesome as ever, and it was lucky that Jean Grey got a Warded Man badge, because if she had gotten The Steel Remains, she might have gone all Dark Phoenix on our asses and eaten the sun.

She does that. Look it up.

nycomiccon2009day1-021a

I asked these two girls if I could take their picture, and they immediately wanted on with me, too. I tried to explain that despite the badges I wasn’t famous, but they didn’t believe me.

nycomiccon2009day1-022b

Here we have a Frank Miller All-Star Batgirl, along with her boyfriend who was dressed as… I dunno. Something.

nycomiccon2009day1-023a

Good thing Batgirl was safely away before I ran into the entire Batman rogues gallery. Ivy, Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow, Riddler and… Steve? I don’t know who the guy on the end is dressed as. Any guesses?

nycomiccon2009day1-024a

Scarecrow felt bad because he was in the back, so we got a good shot of him and his TWM badge up close.

Would you believe that I took even more pictures on Saturday than on Friday? It’s true. Stay tuned, true believer, for the next installment!

Stay Tuned For NY ComicCon Post!

Sorry for the delay, but I’m a bit under the weather today, and still sorting through all the photos I took. It was an absolutely incredible weekend. Feels like it was a dream.

I’ll start posting pictures and my thoughts tomorrow, I promise. For now, I’m putting some honey in my tea and going to bed.

For Love of Dragons

I had just done an interview with Shawn Speakman at Suduvu when he posted his essay in Defense of George RR Martin and his ever-late novel, A Dance With Dragons.

This is a topic I have thought often on, as Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire seriesĀ  is an enormous inspiration to me, and so I posted my own essay about it the other day. I think I was actually more profound in the comments than in the actual post, but you can be the judge. I wrote more about my own experiences as a writer, rather than picking apart Martin’s publishing history and the internet gossip about his life, but the gist was that you shouldn’t judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes.

I know the passion Martin stirs in people, but I am still surprised at the response to my post and the others that have cropped up. The internets are abuzz with chatter and cross linking. Check this out:

Shawn Speakman was quick to point some people my way in a follow-up post on Suvudu

Aidan Moher commented heavily on my post on his blog, A Dribble of Ink

Voyager Online, the blog of my publisher in Australia, also got in on the action, as did Speculative Horizons, who did their own post on the subject, A Dance With Delusion, a day or two earlier.

There’s also a post on Graeme’s Fantasy Book Review worth reading, if the subject interests you.

It’s nice to see so many people coming out of the woodwork to voice their support. It’s a reminder that ASOIAF unites more people than it divides, and that for every troll out there on the internet just looking to post anonymous bile, there are reasonable people who care about the SF community as well.

In other news, another 2 great Painted Man reviews! These from Photons with Character and khhast.
