Division 18

About a year ago (jeez, has it been that long, already?), I did a post about Division 18, the Union of Costumed Novelty Performers, which is something near and dear to my heart, as I was there at its inception, and have taken great joy watching it grow and mutate over the years into far more than just the sum of its parts.

The short version of the story, if you don’t want to read through the old post, is that me and my friends Jeremy and Matt used to pass around this comic book where we would take turns doing one panel in an ongoing story. The panel could be anything you wanted, so long as it did not contradict the panels preceding it. We did about three 48 page books in this fashion, seen only by us and our friends, and I look back on it as one of the most fun things I’ve ever done and a really bright spot in an otherwise dreary part of my professional life.

We created a huge cast of characters, from the superhero Ken Random, whose powers changed (randomly) every panel, to an irate Scotsman, a French Maid assassin, and a monkey with a diaper full of poo to fling at you if you pissed him off.

Good times.

After I started working on The Painted Man, Matt and Jeremy decided to take some of our characters on road, creating a “real” comic called Division 18. Three issues were created, and the first, now a collector’s item, was published last year from the now-defunct Silent Devil Press. Not to be deterred by their publisher’s sinking ship, Jeremy and Matt created Division 18 Online to publish the completed material and and create new comics. They’re posting a new page every weekday, and are halfway through the second issue. Take a look if you have a chance. It’s some funny shit.

Below is one of my personal favorites of the panels I did for the old jam comic. In the panel, young Billy Random has been kidnapped by the Evil Interstellar frigate captain Lord Flatula, and his amorphous servant, Glopulon. But BIlly Random doesn’t take shit from men in speedos:

Okay, I’m getting back to work on The Desert Spear. I promise I have not forgotten about the Writing to Sell posts, and will be getting back to them soon.

Desert Spear UK Cover Art

You may have seen my post a while ago about the mock-up for the cover of The Desert Spear, which is the sequel to The Painted Man. I showed the production rough that was being sent to artist extraordinaire Larry Rostant, who did the first cover, who then hired a model and did the actual painting.

Well I am pleased to announce that not only are the results in, they are awesome! So have a little sneak peek at it, since it won’t be on shelves until August 2009:A war is brewing between humans and demonkind, but when another man claiming to be the Deliverer appears out of the desert, the isolated human fortress cities seem more likely to turn on one another than unite. And the demon generals have yet to reveal themselves…

The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of 2008

The Painted Man has had some hard days. In addition to having a Creator who is abominably slow at writing and painstakingly anal about revisions, he’s lived a life plauged with demons, both inside and out. He’s given up a lot in his never-ending battle against the corelings, so it’s nice sometimes when the universe gives something back.

It’s been a good week for our tattooed friend. In addition to selling out on Amazon and emptying the publisher’s warehouse to the point where they may have to go back on press, the PM’s first adventure has been named # 7 in Amazon UK’s list of the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of 2008.

That’s gotta make a disfigured outcast feel good.

It sure makes me feel great.

Want a Free ARC of The Warded Man?

Amazon.co.uk is SOLD OUT of copies of The Painted Man, and the US version, The Warded Man, doesn’t come out until March. What’s a poor, impatient reader to do?

Sign up on Library Thing to request a free copy! All you have to do is promise to write a review. They have 50 copies to give away, and 600 or so requesters, so your odds are about 1 in 12. Not too shabby.

Tattooed Samurai

My morning google alert has informed me that the second volume of the Japanese translation of The Painted Man is going on sale November 21!

Because Japanese writing takes up more space than English, it is common to split a long novel into smaller parts in the Japanese market. The Painted Man, for example, has been split into three volumes. I’d tell you what’s covered in each volume, but I don’t read Japanese.

Anyway, you’ll notice volume II is 21 yen cheaper than the first. So if you buy 36 copies, it’s like getting the 37th for free. What a steal!

I haven’t seen the cover art full-sized yet, but I will post that when I have it. In the meantime, there’s the thumbnail above to tide you all over. Looks like a shot of Arlen running from the sand demons after finding the spear. Sweet.

In other news, The Morning Star, which bills itself as Britain’s only Socialist daily newspaper, posted a review of The Painted Man on Monday. You can see the review here. I’m more of a pro-regulation capitalist than a socialist, but with the bi-partisan $700 billion US bailout plan, these days the two are looking close enough for horseshoes, hand grenades, and government work, so there’s no reason we can’t all get along.

Lots of behind-the-scenes stuff going on that I can’t talk about, but maybe soon. In the meantime, my next post will be about Christina Aguilera.

Seriously.
