Pre-Order The Great Bazaar!

great_bazaar_cover

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Subterranean Press is producing a book of short stories set in the world of The Warded Man entitled The Great Bazaar, and Other Stories. The book will publish in January 2010, but it is already available for pre-order, and will be released well before The Desert Spear in April 2010.

The book will be a small 5.5 x 8 cloth-bound hardcover with jacket art by the excellent Lauren Cannon, who also designed the wards and some of the other art for this site. The title story centers around Arlen Bales during his time as a Messenger. This is essentially chapter 16.5 of The Warded/Painted Man, showing how Arlen comes to find the lost city of Anoch Sun.

The Great Bazaar is a wonderful introduction into Arlen’s world for new readers, as well as an exciting and informative tale for fans of the larger series. It is set in the city-state of Fort Krasia, AKA The Desert Spear, so it is also an excellent appetizer for those waiting eagerly for the second book in the series, which begins there.

In addition to the main story, there will be a couple of deleted scenes from The Warded Man, essentially short stories in and of themselves, and supplemental material including a glossary and grimoire of wards with descriptions both of the symbols and the demons they repel (including some demons not yet seen!). Supplies will be limited, as it will be a relatively small print run. The run will include 200 signed and numbered editions. Pre-order your copy now!

Subterranean Press has a long history of producing high quality original books and collectible versions of modern classics. I am immensely pleased and proud to add my name to their list of distinguished authors.

I have some other cool announcements in the queue, so keep your eyes on the Peephole!

  5. Was really excited about this, but I’m from the UK, so it would be $45, plus another $17 for shipping… Boo!

Is there any chance of a UK release? I really want to get one of the limited editions, but am a poor student!

  6. Paul, there will be a limited edition UK deluxe version of The Painted Man coming out (hopefully) later this year that contains The Great Bazaar, but it will likely cost more than $62.

Secret option #3 would be to buy the unsigned $20 version and bring it to my next UK signing, which will be around the time The Desert Spear launches in April 2010. I will personalize the heck out of it!

  7. Hey Peat

I want to go for Secret option #3 – so you’d better be signing in Glasgow (or Edinburgh) otherwise you’ll upset both me and Paul (who introduced me to The Painted Man).

    🙂

  8. Hi Kate,

If you know a store in Glasgow or Edinburgh that will host a signing, I’ll see what I can do. 🙂

  9. Borders in Glasgow hosts a lot of signings.

Get your people on to their people 😉

  13. Aaaargh! I just got “The Desert Spear” and only learned about “The Great Bazaar” when I saw it listed on the ,also by, page. I was afraid it was book two in the series and I had missed it. I am glad to see it is more of a companion then part of the series. Of course I’m still going to go get it but right now I’m ready to start “The Desert Spear” so I’ll be lost in those pages for a few days. Peter “The Warded Man” was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was so good that I finished it in about a day and a half. You are so talented, please keep up the good work. I can’t wait to see what else you come up with regardless of whether it is set in Arlen’s world or something new. You are now one of my favorite authors. Right up there with Andrea Norten and Peirs Anthony. (Sorry if I mis-spelled any names)

  14. I’m in the same position as James here, and I have been searching in vain for a copy of The Great Bazaar for a few months now. The only thing I can find about it is 2 – 4 copies on Amazon.com that would cost nearly £150 for me to get! I only read The Painted Man about a month ago, and when I was half way through I had already ordered The Desert Spear so I could continue on without break! Eagerly awaiting The Daylight War, but I was hoping to have The Great Bazaar to complete the collection!

Is there any way of acquiring this without buying from Amazon or such?

    Regards, Darren.

  15. TGB will eventually be available in some other format (keep an eye on my blog for news of that when I have it), but the Subterranean small hardcover edition will probably never be reprinted, so it will always be something of a collector’s item. There were less than 2,500 of them printed. Even I only have a handful, and they are all earmarked as contest prizes/charity giveaways.

This is the cheapest one I’ve seen in a while:

  16. Hi,
Have been searching for a copy of TGB in vain the only one I can find is on Amazon for $350!! I’m in Australia and have only recently read Painted man and Desert Spear, You are now one of my FAV authors! Just loved the book and have already re-read them ! Can’t wait for Daylight War. Will be TBG be released as paperback??
Thankyou so much for writing such an awesome series.

    Cheers,
    Michelle

  17. Thanks, Michelle!

Both novellas will be released in the UK and Australia as eBooks in April 2011 when The Desert Spear comes out in mass market paperback, and will eventually see print sometime closer to the release of The Daylight War in 2012.

  18. Hey Peter!

I accidently came across The Painted Man on ebay last year, and am now reading The Desert Spear. Can not put it down!
I’m very disappointed that I can’t find The Great Bazaar anywhere (except amazon for a price I wish I could afford). Is there any chance it is going to be re-released in the near future?? I would just love a copy!

  19. Where are you, Yasmine? Since you are using the “Painted” Man title, I am assuming the UK. If so, good news! The Great Bazaar will be available THIS MONTH as both an e-book and a promotional thingamabob belly-banded to the new Desert Spear paperbacks (which will also include a Daylight War excerpt).

  20. Hi Peat,

I am from Australia and have the 2011 Del Rey Mass Market edition of The Desert Spear. I’ve been looking for the promotional paperback edition of the Desert Spear that includes The Great Bazaar (mentioned in your response to Yasmine on April 11, 2011) with no success. Will the Great Bazaar eventually find its way into paperback form again? (I’m really not an e-book fan).

  21. Hi Ian,

The Desert Spear paperback with the included Great Bazaar pamphlet is an exclusive promotion from Waterstones in the UK. They are still available, so it might be possible to order one no matter where you’re from. If not, the book will be formally printed in the UK next year. There are currently no plans to go back to press in the US in the near future.
