Warded Mans in Need of Covers

Posted by Meg

Last week, Peat sent out a call to fans with the original hardcover Warded Man. They could win a chance to score the new Larry Rostant cover to wrap around their original books.

At first, the rules were to just send a picture of the book, but then Peat asked fans to make a sad face while holding up the cover.

The first twenty folks to send in their pictures will win a cover that they can slip over the original jacket. Pretty nifty.

Check out some of the entries below.

Amanda Warded Man Cover Giveaway

The very first entry was from Amanda who took her picture very early in the morning.

Jason sadface Warded Man Cover

Jason sent in the first sadface entry. He looks pretty upset.

John sadface Warded Man

Tracy Warded Man Cover

There are still a couple of covers left to be given away! Email your sad face Warded Man picture to contest@www.petervbrett.com to claim yours.

Launch Day: UK Paperback Daylight War

Posted by Peat

DW paperback UK

Huzzah! The Daylight War comes out in paperback in the UK today!

When the book first was released in hardcover back in February, I was already on tour before my author copies arrived. Usually I like to quality check a book (and hug it and tell it is precious to me) before readers see it on the shelves, but this time I had to wait until the UK leg of my tour. Thankfully, fans started tweeting pictures of themselves holding their copies, and let me live the thrill of holding it the first time vicariously through them. I was sick and lonely and traveling constantly, and I can’t express how great it made me feel to see those pictures.

I expected to have the paperback in plenty of time, but DHL had an outdated address for me, and it is easier to just hit yourself in the head with a hammer than deal with DHL customer service to reroute a package. After two phone calls (one of which was just 55 minutes on hold listening to an endless loop of the refrain of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”*), three emails, and four livechat sessions on their website, they basically told me to piss off and talk to the sender. I was all set to ask you all to send more pix to get me through.

Thankfully, Voyager sorted it at the last minute, and my samples arrived yesterday:

Aren’t they gorgeous? Hardback, Trade Paperback, B-Format & Mass Market Paperback. It’s like a nesting doll.

The problem is that now I am disappointed, because I was looking forward to pix of fans with their books. Feel free to send some! You can tweet them (@PVBrett), or mail to contest@www.petervbrett.com.

You can order copies from Waterstones, Amazon UK or pick it up at your local bookstore.

NYCC 2013 – Sunday

The last day of a con is always bittersweet. On one hand, you are trying to drink up everything last bit of everything, see more, do more … but really you are just plain exhausted and can’t wait to get home so you don’t have to interact with humans for, like, ever.

Signings will take it out of you too. I had my final signing on Sunday at the Random House booth.

Is Elona Really That Shameless?

Posted by Peat

Elona fan art by French Jess

So in an attempt to get my life in order after a busy year of touring, two moves, getting Cassie into kindergarten and establishing new routines, and, of course, constant work on Skull Throne, I have been trying to catch up on my backlog of unanswered reader mail. This week, my personal facebook mail (as opposed to the Facebook Author Page mail, which Meg helps with). I still have a few thousand readers all over the world who friended me personally before I got my author page together, in addition to people I actually know IRL.

A few days ago, the backlog was 67 messages, dating all the way back to mid-2012. By this morning I had whittled it to 26 unreplied, dating back to about the time the new book launched and I started touring. I answered messages on the fly as best I could while touring, but there is still a bottleneck there.

After that, I still have… oh, sweet Everam. About a gazillion unanswered messages on email, goodreads, google+, and probably my Reddit AMA’s.

But the only way out is through. Will try to give it an hour each morning until I catch up. I am now down to 15 unreplied on fb. One of the messages I replied to today was kind of fun, so I am posting the exchange here.

***MINOR DAYLIGHT WAR SPOILER ALERT***

Loved Daylight War. Quite the cliffhanger, literally and figuratively and I’m sure you’ll hear that comment a zillion times. One small thing that pulled me out of the story a little bit, about which I’d love to hear your feedback. Elona suggests that Leesha roll in the hay with Gared, admittedly after discussing a few other options and yet shortly thereafter, Leesha finds the two of them going at it. Is Elona really that shameless? I found it surprising that she wouldn’t at least wait a while as Leesha is probably considering him.

Anyway, in no way is this a criticism, love your books, can’t wait for the next one. Bought the kindle version for immediate reading and the hardcover, beautiful artwork, for my bookcase. Also wish that you’d get the electronic version when buying the hardcover. Save me some money but oh well, so worth it.

To which I belatedly replied:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for writing, and for all the kind words! So sorry for the slow reply. There was a flood of email around the time of the book launch/tour, and it’s taken me a while to catch up. Some things got buried.

So is Elona really that shameless? Absolutely. She is utterly self-centered in all things, and got an extra thrill from the idea of privately shaming her daughter for all the times Leesha has publicly talked down to her.

This doesn’t mean she doesn’t love her daughter and want her to succeed, though.

People are complicated.

Regards, Peter

P.S. I agree with you about bundling e-books with paper ones, and it looks like many booksellers are beginning to agree. Hopefully it will be the standard soon.

After noticing several inconveniences of the outfit on the way to the con, like her hair sticking to the mask, I started the #superheroineproblems hashtag.

Excited to be a Myke Cole’s Geek Geek Revolution panel Saturday morning.

After loosing last year, Myke was relieved to be second to last … mostly so he didn’t have to wear a too-small Jar Jar Binks mask …

Watch the whole Geek Geek Revolution panel on YouTube! It is full of nerdy joy.

Some fans caught us after the panel to show off this amazing warded shirt.

Then I ran over to Walter Simonson’s signing and totally went stuttering fanboy on him.
