Create a Coreling Winners!

Posted by Meg

I am so excited to announce the winners of the Create a Coreling contest. When Peat and I first put this contest into action, we had no idea how it would grow into an epic fan fiction contest. It’s been an incredible process for Peat to witness. You can read some of his thoughts on all the fantastic entries in his earlier blog post: Fanfiction, Corelings and Conan. And it’s not just the quantity of entries, the quality has been blowing our socks off.

For the written entries, it has been incredibly inspiring reading everyone’s stories and notes. Especially when someone says they haven’t written in a while and then turn out a fantastic demonic tale.

The artwork has been incredible. I love the sculptures, drawings, wards and digital artwork of the demons. The colors and designs seem to take elements of Thesa and then expand them into something new.

Whether with words or pictures, I thoroughly enjoyed each and every entry. This has been an extremely difficult contest to judge, but I am really excited to honor and reward six lucky entries.

So, without further ado, the prizes and the winners ….

Grand Prize

The Grand Prize is a copy of The Warded Man recorded by Graphic Audio as well as a Graphic Audio navy blue T-shirt featuring Lauren K. Cannon‘s portrayal of Renna. The lucky winner will also receive a poster of Renna signed by Peat and the cast of the recording. Pretty fancy stuff!

The Grand Prize winner is Tristan who authored the gripping tale entitled ‘Apocrypha of Gaijah‘.

Peat and I both fell in love with this story immediately. The moment I started reading, I felt completely engaged with the narrator and the demons. The format of having a treatise of rare demons is such an excellent idea, and Tristan’s descriptions of his demon creations are spellbinding.

1st Prize

First Prize is a copy of The Desert Spear Audiobook narrated by Pete Bradbury as well as a signed Graphic Audio Renna poster by Lauren K. Cannon.

Keith, with his chilling story ‘The Calling of the Core’, is the first place winner.

I just can’t say enough good things about this story. I love that we are thrown into a terrifying situation immediately with a narrator we instantly care for. I feel like fear and courage are both depicted beautifully here.

2nd Prize

Winners will receive a hardcover edition of The Desert Spear along with a signed Graphic Audio poster featuring Lauren K. Cannon‘s portrait of Renna fighting off wood demons.

We have two lucky winners for 2nd prize:

Kym with her incredible Leaf Coreling sculpture. When I first saw Kym’s masterfully made Leaf Coreling, I almost peed in my pants I was so scared. She accompanied her creation with a short story that gives us a glimpse of what this small but capable monster is made of.

Joseph L. Selby with his creative tale ‘Half-Demon’. This beautifully written story really captures the Warded Man’s personality. I love the description of the half-demon coming closer in the desert sun, and the implications of where the Warded Man is headed. Those are some hefty ideas that will get fans theorizing about The Daylight War and other books to come.

3rd Prize

Third prize is a copy of the First Voyager Edition of The Desert Spear.

Jay with his awesome creations: the Lure Demon and the Mirror Demon. I love this entry, from the cartoonish hulk-like mirror demon to the parchment paper effect. It’s a fantastic way to combine words and pictures into one creation.

Snellopy with his tale ‘Bone Alagai’ and his three coreling creations. This story is so creepy and fits right in with The Demon Cycle world. Beautiful storytelling.

Honorable Mention

Okay, okay. So I couldn’t limit myself to just six winners. Five lucky entries won Honorable Mention. Each winner will receive a copy of Peat’s Red Sonja Blue comic, signed by Peat himself. Here they are in no particular order:

Charlie for his fast-paced story ‘The Hoarder’. This is a great story playing off the idea of warders “hoarding” special wards instead of sharing them like the Warded Man.

Katarsyna for her Squirrelings and Moth Demons informational posters. I love the illustrations, especially the little heart above the regular squirrel when he finds a nut.

Carol for her Water Demon painting and ward designs. Carol combined just about everything scary about the ocean and mashed them up into one demon. Thank god it only lives in the sea.

Aurelien for her story about the Swarm Demon. I love the cleverness of this idea for a demon getting past the wardnet. Absolutely brilliant.

Gianna for her picture of a Shadow Demon. A beautiful portrait of a scaled dog-like creature surrounded by a spiraling shadow. Truly terrifying.

Please check out the rest of the creative entries from the contest here. Each and every one is unique and full of personality. Thank you to everyone who entered!

Don’t forget! The third and final chapter of The Desert Spear will be released by Graphic Audio on Wednesday June 20th. You can buy the first two installments here.

Fog Demon

Posted by Meg

Here is the very last entry to the Coreling Contest! Amazing how many entries we have had and how this simple little idea for a contest grew into a huge fan art and fan fiction contest! Peat and I are so pleased with the hard work and creativity everyone has shown! Winners will be announced this Thursday June 7th right here on Peat’s blog.

Note: Since this entry was submitted late, it will not be eligible for a prize, but is awesome nonetheless.

This entry is from James.

Hey,

I realise that the contest is over, but I had fun writing this and figured I may as well put it out there regardless of entering the competition or not. It’s one of my first pieces of writing, I hope it doesn’t read too horribly.

Fog Demon:

There are many demons that are thought not to even really exist anymore, demons that strike fear above and beyond other demons by their very mystery. One such demon is the fog demon, residing within the thickest fog. Reported sightings seem like fairytales, though the corpses they leave in their wake might just hint at their existence.

The most coherent of the sightings is that of an unknown messenger caught in darkness even during the light of day. As the sun started to fall from its noon peak, fog began to rise from the ground, fog that seemed to get thicker and thicker with every passing moment until even the sun was lost to his sight. An experienced messenger, he wasn’t stupid enough to try and continue his journey so he immediately set up his portable warding circle, knowing that it need not be night for demons to rise from the core.

Confident in the strength of his warding, he settled in for the long haul, knowing he would be there until morning, sitting in the middle of the well worn path between villages. As darkness began to settle, the first signs of something amiss began to register on his consciousness, the sounds of scurrying all around him. Shapes seemed to form and then disappear around him like smoke, each closer than the last, almost at the edge of his circle. No tell tale light from approaching corelings trying to break through the circle were there to relieve him of his fears of these unknown beings. Or were they just his imagination playing tricks on him?

As the small fire he had been tending for his evening meal began to fade, the shapes seem to almost be appearing within the circle and real fear started to creep into his conscious. Throwing some more kindling and wood from his small supply onto the fire, it flared up to reveal small outlines, similar to that of a child’s, and maybe a dozen of them, all only a few metres away. Barely visible, as if their outline had been drawn on the fog, before even a second had passed, a low panicked keening rose from them, and their outlines quickly disappeared from sight as if they’d never been there.

Sure that they had stepped within his warding circle, panic consumed him and he almost ran from his circle to escape from these ghosts. Rigorous training kicked his thinking back into gear, and he knew he would stand no chance of survival outside his circle, these ghosts were one thing, but corelings were a certainty. Clinging to the hope that the fire had scared them off, he sat there in the complete darkness of the foggy night, his small fire the only thing keeping him alive.

He jerked awake suddenly, almost complete darkness all that greeted him, just a few glowing embers remained after his accidental slumber. Panicked, he jumped up to tend to the fire, trying to blow life into the few pieces of wood he had left. Just as it was flickering to life he heard a gentle footfall just behind him. It was then as he spun round that he got his only good view of the fog demon. Humanoid in shape, with almost translucent skin hanging loosely from its frame, its fingers tipped with razor sharp claws that gouged a chunk out of his raised arm before the newly lit fire drove it away.

Then almost as if this confrontation signalled some kind of end to his attack, the fog began to lift and the faint outlines within it faded to nothing. Now tending to his bleeding arm, he was thankful that he now only needed to spend the night with ordinary demons, not ghosts for which his wards had no effect.

It seems no common wards, like those used against tree, fire, rock, and wind demons have any effect on the fog demon, and any that claim they have a ward for them is extremely shy of proving its potency. It seems that living in the fog, they are even weaker to light than other corelings, and even light from a fire is enough to harm them, or at least fend them off. Fire and wards or not, it is probably best to avoid the fog.

Hope you enjoy,

James

Thanks to James for sending in his story. I love the description of the shadow demons’ outlines in the fog. Beautiful!

That is the end of the coreling contest entries! Don’t forget to check back on Thursday to view the winners!

A Living Fog

Posted by Meg

We are almost there! Our second to last entry comes from Gianna. Introducing … the Shadow Demon. Winners will be announced this Thursday, June 7th.

Hello Peter,

My name is Gianna and I want to start off by saying that I am in love with your novels. They are some of the best books I’ve read in a long while. You are a very talented writer and I cannot wait until your next book is out. Here is my entry along with a photo I made of my demon. I hope you like it.

SHADOW DEMONS

On the darkest nights, when the neither moon nor stars can cast their light onto the land of Thesa, rare and ancient creatures rise from the Core: shadow demons. When the clouds hang in the sky like a thick blanket, shadow demons arise in the forests and mountains of Thesa. Shadow demons are never seen in the deserts of Krasia and like to conceal themselves in foul weather like heavy rain when they stalk their prey.

Shadow demons are large dog-like creatures; their heads reaching to the chest of most grown men. They are thin with long legs making them nimble and swift. Pray one never finds himself in the presence of a shadow demon while on foot, its long legs enabling it to catch up even the fastest horses. Dark, jagged, scales that resemble black obsidian stones cover their body. Shadow demons have two long whip-like tails that they to lash out at its target. It has a long muzzle with yellow razor sharp fangs that protrude from its mouth, two large canines are used to grab hold of their prey; their bite releasing deadly venom. Shadow demons have glowing red eyes and small spike-like protrusions line the contours of its face. Thick dark shadows billow around this demon like a living fog.

Unlike most Corelings, attacking at first chance, shadow demons are cunning and silently pursue their prey until the opportune moment to strike. Shadow demons prefer sneak attacks opposed to frontal assaults. When they stalk their prey the darkness surrounds their bodies completely, allowing them to blend into the natural darkness of the landscape. They then can manipulate the darkness, reaching towards their target like thick tendrils of smoke, and grab onto their prey where they drag the person into the darkness to devour them. If their sneak attack fails they will spring into action and hunt down their prey as do the other corelings.

Their scales are lightweight, making it easier for them to move quickly and avoid attacks, but lack in strength and makes their armor weak. Their biggest weapon is the darkness that they manipulate; wards of light will banish the darkness, leaving the shadow demon unable to use his ability. Once the darkness is no more the weakest part of the creature is its underbelly where the scales are the thinnest.

Shadow demons are rarely seen, but there is only one man that has lived to tell about his encounter. The Warded Man.

Thank you to Gianna for that awesome entry! I absolutely love the picture of the Shadow Demon. Great work!
