As I mentioned the other day, The Painted Man (AKA The Warded Man) has advanced into new territory once more, this time selling Chinese translation and distribution rights to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao in record deals for JABberwocky and their Chinese associate agency, Grayhawk! The winning bidder was publisher Gaea Books, whom my Chinese agent tells me are a very respected name in SF genre publishing. You can see an English translation of Gaea’s website here.

I’m always thrilled when my work translates into a new language, and Chinese is one of the most spoken languages on the planet, so I’m extra excited about this deal, which marks the eleventh language and twelfth territory my work will reach. Not to mention the fact that my dream book tour now extends through Taipei, Hong Kong, and Macao, which is fantastic. Is mainland China next? I am ready to start scaling the Great Wall.

In other news, a new Warded Man Review is up on Wordwebbing, a site that will also be featuring an author interview with me next week.

Here’s a little something for my Polish readers, a compilation of some of the reviews of the Polish translation of The Painted Man, Malowany Czloweik, that I’ve found while browsing (that is, narcissistically googling myself on) the web.

Since I don’t speak Polish myself, I’ve had to rely on google’s translator, which is just godawful. Sometimes the results are pretty funny, but if you’re trying to actually get a feel for what the reviewer is saying, it’s an uphill climb. Not only does the translator frequently guess wrong with words with multiple meanings, but maybe one word in six is not translated at all. Google’s Polish dictionary is a little lacking, I guess. I will give links to the google translated pages as well as the original Polish.

First up is short review of books I & II (the Polish version was split into two volumes) on a blog called Tylkodlam. Here is the original Polish: Book I and Book II, and the crappily translated English: Book I and  Book II.

Here’s a long one from Polgej.pl. The translation is just atrocious, but I did catch the word “masterpiece”, so really, what else is there to know? Here is the original Polish, and the horrendously translated English.

This review on Biblioteka Swiatow is surprisingly well translated. I guess the reviewer didn’t use a lot of five dollar words. I think I posted his review of book one a while ago, because this one is also for book II. Here is the original Polish, and the actually quite readable translated English.

Reviews of both book I and book II on Literatura Valkiria. Here is the original Polish: book I and book II, and the so-so translated English: book I and book II.

A review of book II on Wirtualna Polska. The reviewer, like many, seems a little ticked off that Fabryka Slow broke the book into two volumes, but seemed to like the story anyway. Here is the original Polish, and the meh translated English.

Another pair of reviews for both books by a reviewer who would rather have had just one volume. Here is the original Polish: book I and book II, and the so-so translated English: book I and book II.

Some of you may recall that last year I promised to send a free copy of The Warded Man to one of my blog readers, Courtney, if she managed to deliver her first child on his due date of March 10, as this was also the Warded Man release date.

Well, due to some complications, Courtney’s date was moved up a bit, but baby Kevin was born hale and healthy on March 4, and I decided to send Courtney a free copy of the book anyway, as a push present. She earned it.

I had forgotten all about this interview I did for Bragelonne, my French publisher, when I visited Paris for a day in September 2008 while I was in Europe promoting my UK book launch. It’s really a wonderful interview, but Bragelonne postponed publishing it online until closer to their release date. The Painted Man French translation will publish from their Milady imprint in September 2009. Bragelonne’s president, Stephan Marsan, was one of my earliest and most vocal supporters, and took the morning off to show me and Myke around Paris, which was really wonderful. I hope to visit again sometime when I am not so pressed for time and can spend more than a day there.

Also in the news, a nice treatment in the Mysterious Galaxy Newsletter, and Aidan Moher from A Dribble of Ink quoted from my recent post about The Desert Spear in his article about Why Writers Write. It’s an interesting read.

As you may know, my book The Painted Man (AKA The Warded Man) has been nominated for the first-ever David Gemmell Legend award. The voting is free and open to everyone, and will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will take the longlist of several dozen nominees and narrow them down to 5 contenders. Voting for this stage ENDS APRIL 1! The second stage will pick a winner from that shortlist. Shortlist voting begins April 10.

Even if I don’t win, it would be great to make it to the shortlist. If anyone read and liked the book, please head over and vote before the longlist deadline!

Don’t try to vote twice from the same computer. They log IP addresses and will disqualify your vote. And I would NEVER suggest going to all your friends’ houses and voting on their computers, too. That would be indecorous.
