Homemade Hero Contest Winners

Sorry to keep everyone waiting with this post. This was a hard one. There were so many wonderful entries in the Homemade Heroes Contest, and all were obviously made with such love and attention that it was heartbreaking to think that not everyone could win. I think that’s why I took my time with the decision. This contest ended the same way all the others do: I want to give everyone a prize, and don’t have enough prizes.

But there were some real champions in this challenge, and they deserve to be called out.

So.

Grand Prize – Signed worldwide first edition hardcovers of The Painted Man, The Great Bazaar and The Desert Spear, plus a super-rare ARC of Brayan’s Gold:

I don’t think there will be any argument when I say the grand prize goes to Mia (<–click link for Mia’s full entry) for her simply breathtaking rendition of the Krasian temple of Sharik Hora, made from the bones of fallen heroes:

Mia seemed reluctant to try her hand for lack of experience, but it seems to me that all she lacked was confidence in her own obvious awesomeness. Grand prize, and well earned. As promised, I will write whatever you want in them (or just sign them for enhanced eBay value!)

1st Prize – Signed trade hardcover of The Great Bazaar:

With the very last entry accepted in the contest, right under the wire, Margherita (<–click to see full entry) proved that good things come to those who wait. Her Bratz doll Leesha and Renna were amazing, as was her Ken doll Rojer, but it was her Arlen that cinched the deal:

2nd Prize – 2 signed ARCs of Brayan’s Gold:

These ARCs (Advance Read Copies)  are ultra-rare, and apart from my own 2 personal copies (which I will never give away), the only ARCs I have. The final edition has all the awesome Lauren Cannon art, but these are the REAL collector’s items.

With so many entries and dioramas to choose from (Leesha, Rojer, Jardir, Arlen, sand demon, wood demon, rock demon, Twilight Dancer, warded campsite, etc., Yelie (<–click to see full entry, also see  here) was a serious contender against Margherita. My favorite of her entries was probably Barbie Leesha, but really, we must celebrate the whole body of work. (Her Hubby Chris helped.):

This isn’t the first contest Justine (<–click to see full entry) has taken a prize in, because she is made of awesome. Her tribal tattoo design kicked ass in the Warding Contest, andher talent continues to shine with these incredible MIghty Muggs redditions of Arlen and Jardir:

Third prize – 2 signed trade hardcovers of Brayan’s Gold:

It is a testament to my incredible readers that even the third prize winners did such spectacular work.

Take French Jess (<–click to see full entry), who wins contest after contest. Why? Because she is cool as hell, that’s why. Oh, French Jess. Je t’adore. Check out her kickass rendition of Jardir and his Sharum taking on One Arm in the Maze:

Another repeat ass-kicker is Arthur (<–click to see full entry), who took home one of the grand prizes in the Warding Contest with his warded lamp posts, and who made the cuddliest demon in town with his plushie One Arm:

To everyone else, thank you so much for entering! I really do wish that I could send prizes to everyone. There wasn’t a single entry that wasn’t awesome and a highlight of my day.

The next contest will be in a month or so for the official release of Brayan’s Gold. It will be something easier and more inclusive, but I don’t have a plan yet. I am open to suggestions…

Welcome to the Family

We have a new addition to the Demon Cycle family! May I present Brayan’s Gold, 6 x 8 inches and 94 pages long. Don’t be fooled by his deceptively small size. This youngster is poised to wow people, packed with 9 full-page B&W interior illustrations and an amazing color cover by the lovely and brilliant Lauren K. Cannon.

My samples came this morning, and they are a joy to behold.

Because I am just that cool a guy, I will be including a copy or two along with the Homemade Heroes prizes. If you’re not one of the fortunate few whose incredible entries qualify, remember that you can still pre-order them from Subterranean Press here.

The book comes in both trade edition (above, left – limited to 5000 copies) and deluxe limited edition (above, right – limited to 750 copies, signed and numbered). Both hardbacks have the same art, but the deluxe has its own cover design, a special signed and numbered title page, and instead of the purple cloth cover, it is done in beautiful white leather, embossed with blue wards, a wonderful compliment to the black leather of The Great Bazaar deluxe, and totally apropos to the wintry fun of the story:

Brayan’s Gold officially goes on sale in January 2011, but it may well be sold out before then, so order fast if you’re interested!

Vote Early, and Tell a Friend!

Exciting news!

Das Flüstern der Nacht (the German translation of The Desert Spear) is in the running on the German book lovers’ site LovelyBooks for their “Der Leserpreis – die besten Buecher 2010” award! It made it to the Shortlist in the category “Fantasie/Science Fiction”, in which I am competing with 35 other books. I’m honored to be among such fine contemporaries.

I’ve never won an award for writing. I sure would like to, though.

Vote here until Friday, December 10. On Monday December 13th, the  Gold, Silver and Bronze will be awarded. Good luck to all my competitors!

Worldbuilders 2011

I should have done this post a while ago, but I have been buried under a landslide of work that piled overhigh while I was off globe-trotting.

As you may already know, it is Worldbuilders time again. This is the brainchild… nay, HEARTchild, of my friend and fellow author Pat Rothfuss, who helps Heifer International raise money every year to provide livestock and renewable food/income sources to underprivileged communities around the world. Pat is a rockstar for guaranteeing that he and his sponsors on Team Rothfuss will match 50% of all donations.

But it’s not all give with no take. For every $10 you contribute, you will be entered into a lottery to win one of the thousands of signed rare/books donated by publishers and authors, including many from yours truly, like copies of the super-rare The Great Bazaar and the not-yet published Brayan’s Gold from Subterranean Press as well as The Warded Man and The Desert Spear from Del Rey Books. Really some amazing stuff from far bigger names than mine. There are only 13 days left to contribute, though, as the fundraiser ends on December 13.

Attention aspiring writers!

In addition to the lottery, Pat is also auctioning off some special items, like professional critiques of YOUR manuscript by agents and editors, as well as one from himself. These auctions will end DECEMBER 3, so hop to, if you’re interested.

Check out Pat’s Worldbuilder’s FAQ for more information, and to see why Pat is cooler than Batman. Follow Pat’s blog for updates on how the fundraiser is going.

As with last year, I am putting my money where my mouth is and contributing to help Team Rothfuss match donations. Nothing compared to his own MASSIVE contributions, but we all do what we can.

I know this is a hard economic year for most everyone, but odds are if you are reading this post, you have a roof over your head and food in your family’s bellies. A small donation can help others less fortunate fill those same basic needs.

Nanaki’s Spear

I keep forgetting to post this. It is one of a million things I feel horrid that I haven’t gotten to, especially since it came a while ago.

A lot of you may remember Nanaki from the UK, who was one of the Grand Prize winners in the Warding Contest. And rightfully so. Her rendition of Leesha’s Herb Basket was just brilliant:

Some time after receiving her prize, Nanaki sent me a beautiful hand-written thank-you card, along with a gorgeous piece of fan art. I’ve been meaning to scan it and share it with the world for a while now, but the scanned image needed a lot of cleanup and travel/work/life got in the way. I’m proud to show it off now:

How awesome is it that I find amazing stuff like this when I clean a layer or two off my desk?

Life is good.
