A Gift From Westeros

My fans, as I’ve often mentioned, ROCK!

Bryan Li was at a George R.R. Martin signing in the UK, and knowing how much of a fan I am, asked GRRM to sign MY book! Which he did:

Thanks, Bryan!

Warded Triforce

So the other day I got an e-mail.

Well, I guess I get e-mails every day, but this one was pretty special. Here’s what it said:

My New Wards Tattoo (Warded Triforce)

Hi Peat,

First I must say that I’m a huge fan which is probably pretty evident.  I recently had this tattoo done, and I figured I would e-mail the pictures so you could have a look for yourself.  I was thinking about holding out until you had another contest but I was too proud of my new wards to wait.

I’ll give you a little story about what it means to me and why I chose to do it other than being a big fan of the series.  The triforce is taken from Legend of Zelda which I’m sure given your geekdom you are at least moderately aware of.  Anyway my two close friends and I decided to get semi-matching tattoos we would each get a triforce with a different piece colored.  Each piece represents a different aspect and the three of us shaded the aspect best suited for our personality and lifestyle.  We would then decorate it as we saw fit.

The upper piece represents POWER I placed the ward for rock demons (or against rock demons) in this triangle because what demon better represents brute strength and cunning then old one-arm and his brood.  The lower left triangle represents WISDOM and the obvious choice for me was the ward for the mind demons.  The lower right triangle (my piece of the triforce) represents COURAGE and the crush ward is used to represent Arlen through out the series and courage and occasionally downright recklessness are the strongest traits for the warded man.  Then I surrounded my friendship with your amazing ward ring to center my tattoo and give it a strong bond.

Anyway there you have it I hope you are as impressed with it as I am.  I eagerly await Brayan’s Gold and The Daylight War. Keep up the amazing work.

Always Inspired,

Greg Markwardt

PS:  On a Geeky side note The Warded Man and Twilight Dancer would kick Link and Epona’s Asses.+

Pretty awesome stuff, huh? Even though Greg didn’t wait for contest, I think I can spare a signed book to send his way. I’m always shocked when people get ward tattoos. It’s an honor to have inspired people to such a degree.

The Zelda theme is also ironically appropriate, since I’ve been addicted to The Legend of Neil for the last couple of weeks.

Homemade Heroes: Cake Toppers

This morning I woke up to another teaser entry to the Homemade Heroes Contest, this from Lood in South Africa, who promises to send his official entry soon. If it’s anything like the teaser, It will be awesome.

Hi there,

So on Sunday (10 October) my good friend Dave from DaveBrendon’s Fantasy and SciFi Weblog had his birthday so naturally we had to have a party on Saturday night. I was kind of stumped on what to get the man for his birthday, so I decided I’d bake him a warded cake. One Mexican chocolate cake with fudge toffee icing and a couple of Warhammer Woodelf figurines later I had this:

The Warded Cake. I took the ward designs from your website and adapted them to be icing friendly. Even if I have to say so myself, I was quite pleased with the final result.

I decided on a battle between The Painted Man and a couple of wood demons set in the interlude period in the first book.

With wood demons bearing down on him…

And I added a couple of minor touches:

(The warded stones are  a personal favourite of mine.)

Add a couple of lesser demon onlookers:

I would have included shots from at the party, but unfortunately the ward circle around the cake was broken by a rogue cake knife and the party demons (and a couple of lesser cake demons) got to it before I had my camera ready. The diorama did not survive for too long after that, but the memory of it will live on forever.

Needless to say, Dave loved it.

Regards,
Lood

Some People Have Too Much Free Time

Take my buddy Myke, for example, who came up to visit for ComicCon. He just e-mailed me the first entry in the Homemade Heroes Contest:

Subject: Homegrown hero for your contest

It’s apple core Jardir: note the tostito shield, fork spear, corn cob helmet and sugar packet veil.

The hot sauce is demon ichor.

Quarter is provided for scale/perspective.

If this doesn’t win, I’ll eat my hat.

Semper Paratus,

Myke

Since I am hoping to have the first prize winner’s entry sitting on my desk, I don’t think this one will last, as it will soon be covered in flies, but there’s nothing stopping YOU from winning! Enter by Thanksgiving for a chance to win one of the great prizes. Rules here.

NYCC Fantasy Author Panel

As I mentioned in my last entry, I was on a panel at New York ComicCon on Friday night with some big names in Fantasy: Jim Butcher, Joe Abercrombie, Naomi Novik, & Brandon Sanderson, as well as debut author Deborah Harkness.

Tor.com did an article about the panel on their blog, including a somewhat spotty transcript. They got most of what was said, but occasionally attributed things to the wrong people. I am quoted as saying a couple of things I didn’t actually say, but whatever. It’s a pretty good article and it really gives the feel of the panel.

But if the feel isn’t enough for you, watch it yourself, thanks to SUVUDU, the Del Rey mega-blog, who graciously recorded and posted the video:

I did several other interviews while at the convention, and will be posting links to those, as well as pictures from my signings and the like, over the next few days.
