When I first set out to write fantasy novels, I had hoped they would be popular, but never dreamed I would create anything that would inspire others to mark their own flesh. But here’s another real-life warded man, Dave from South Africa, and his reason for permanently warding himself:
I decided on the Rock Ward for a couple of reasons – firstly, because any ward would make an awesome tattoo and as soon as I saw them I knew I wanted a ward-tattoo; secondly, because I see plenty of my own struggles in Arlen’s struggles against One-Arm. Since I’ve committed myself to writing a novel I’ve come up against plenty of up-hill – making time to write, being mentally buggered after the nightly sessions, having to push through the constant thoughts of wanting to give up, etc etc and the Rock Ward especially sort of crystallizes those struggles for me; every time I look at it I get that surge of purpose, and I guess we all need that surge to get us started.
Also, I’ve got it on my left arm (as you noticed), and I’ll be getting other tattoos in time – the Snake-Wheel symbol from WoT and the Bridgeburners Sigil from Erikson’s Malazan novels; I guess when I die my arm will be filled with tattoos inspired by SFF novels because I want people to be able to see what my influences are – those writers I respect and admire and those stories I’ve read that makes me want to write the same kind of inspiring, kickass stuff. My right-arm will be tattooed with the titles of my novels as they get published. 🙂
Anyway, thanks for being one of my inspirations, Peat; If people call me The Shoulder-Warded Man I’ll be proud to accept the title. 🙂
Regards,
Dave

I’m honored to be the first among your other awesome tattoos to come!

I hope everyone had a fun Halloween! I was in Columbus, OH, at the World Fantasy Convention, hobnobbing with the likes of Scott Lynch, Sam Sykes, Blake Charlton, and others of their ilk. (And of course, when I say “hobnobbing”, I mean “getting drunk at the bar”.)
Anyway, while I was away, I received some photos that indicated that apparently Arlen not only inspires tattoos, but Halloween costumes as well!
Here’s Jess as Arlen’s disciple:

Here’s Jess normally, with La Lance du Desert:

Her guinea pig enjoys it as well:

And here’s Ricky as Arlen himself:

Ghosts and goblins got nothin’ on the Warded Demon Hunters!

Another entry for the Homemade Heroes contest!
Iris from Germany has created a teeny-tiny Abban figure; here’s how she did it:
Hi Peat!
I got a little entry too. I say little, because the figure is not that big. It’s about three centimetres. I never had real action figures and I donated all my dolls and barbies two years ago, so it was a little bit difficult 😉
Plus I moved from one end of germany to the other, recently and I didn’t take all of my stuff with me. But I found a little figure from a “Kinder Surprise” or also known as “Kinder egg”. In germany it’s known as a “Überraschungsei”. I don’t know weather you know this candy, but it’s a chocolate egg with a little toy in it. And I found a figure from Unhygienix, from Asterix. And I made him into Abban 😀 I even made him a little turban.
Sincerely,
Iris
Here’s the original Unhygienix:

And here’s our favorite little Khaffit:

What a khutie!

Homemade Hero entries are starting to trickle in, and they have been worth the wait. There are still a few weeks left to enter before Thanksgiving, but already the bar has been set quite high. Check out this amazing entry by Justine Glass, who you may recall was one of the winners of the Warding Contest. She is ready to test for her Warding Guild license:
Hello again!
Well I’ve gotta say that this has been one of the funnest, most time consuming, projects I’ve undertaken in a long while….and probably one I will never do again! The two characters I chose were an obvious choice but my favorites from the series: Arlen and Jardir.
Ok so let me explain a little about what went into making these little dudes. First off I purchased a few Mighty Muggs from my local toy store and got to work cleaning and priming them with white plastic adhering spray paint. After three or so coats I was left with a blank surface to work with. The process of priming, sketching, painting, coloring, sculpting and sealing took about a week for each character. Arlen was the hardest because of his wards and because my sharpie and prisma markers wouldn’t adhere to the spray paint. I decided to give Arlen his infamous black robe which was hand-stitched out of heavy polyester fabric. I tell yah I’ve never sewn before but I now have an immense respect for people who do it professionally!
Jardir was my favorite piece to paint, sculpt and seal because I was able to mess around with his face a little and draw him as I imagined him from the book. His robes were the hardest part because brush paint looked to cheep and I don’t have access to an airbrush gun. So I improvised and used white charcoal pencil and a flat gray prisma marker to get the fabric-like effect. It worked out beautifully. His helmet/crown is made from sculpty clay with the turban sewn directly onto the rim. The veil is a separate piece with can be removed or positioned as seen fit. I added a button to the back for a better hold.
All-in-all I must say I love how they turned out and I hope you do to!
Sincerely,
Justine Glass

Who says girls’ dolls can’t be hard-core?
Lisa, from Perth, Australia, submitted this Homemade Hero of the tough little Tanner girl:
I chose Renna; demon-killing, flesh-warded, and very awesome. 🙂
I painted her skin with acrylic paint, referencing Lauren Cannon’s official series artwork for the wards. The knife is made with cardboard, jute twine, and more paint. The necklace is made from glass beads, and the clothes are black felt, black ribbon, and jute twine. I also gave her sleep eyes, and new pull strings.
Here is the Blythe doll she started with:

And here is Renna in all of her bad-ass glory:

A great job like this really sets the bar for all you other creative types out there! Don’t forget, the contest ends on Thanksgiving, so get those paintbrushes going!
